At the crossroads between the traditional repertoire, jazz and pop music, performer/composer Lee Seul-Gi shares her passion for the kayagŭm, a zither-like instrument with 12 strings. The kayagŭm is arguably the best known traditional Korean musical instrument. Join us for an enchanting evening with Lee Seul-Gi, as she reveals the beauty of a time-honored tradition and explores new musical frontiers with songs of her own composition.

About the Performers Lee Seul-Gi is one of Korea's leading kayagŭm players. Trained in the style of Kim Jukpa by her mother, Human Cultural Asset Moon Jae-Sook, Lee has released three kayagŭm albums since 2005: The Song of String, In the Green Café and Blossom. She is a member of the KBS Orchestra of Traditional Korean Music and has received the President's Award from Korea's National Classical Music Institute. Currently a doctoral student in Korean classical music at Seoul National University, Lee has performed at Korea's National Classical Music Institute, the Sejong Arts Center, KBS Hall, the University of California at Los Angeles and Carnegie Hall. Yang Soungwhan is a renowned pianist and award-winning jazz composer/arranger. He currently serves as the president and artistic director of the world music ensemble VinaLog. The winner of the 41st Dong-A Music Competition, Yang is regularly commissioned to compose for the KBS Traditional Music Orchestra and the Orchestra of the National Center for Korean Performing Arts in Seoul, and he was collaborated with kayagŭm artist Jung Sung Gil. Yang has studied at Seoul National University and the Korean National University of Arts. |
