Emphasizing speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, the language program’s balanced and thorough approach instills in the student a greater understanding and appreciation for Korean culture. Korean language courses extend over a semester of twelve sessions. Instructors are experienced Korean language teachers with university affiliations.

Class size is limited to allow more interaction with the instructor and other students. Classes are offered throughout the year in five sequential levels from basic to advanced.

  • Spring Session, January 30 – April 16, 2008
All levels meet once a week. Currently in session, registration is no longer accepted for this semester.

  • Summer Session I, May 12 – June 18, 2008 (*a make-up class will be held for Memorial Day 5/26)
All levels meet twice a week. A detailed schedule, including class dates and meeting times will be posted on The Korea Society's website in early-April and registration for the Summer Session I will begin at that time.

  • Summer Session II, July 7 – August 13, 2008
All levels meet twice a week. A detailed schedule, including class dates and meeting times will be posted on The Korea Society's website in early-April and registration for the Summer Session II will begin at that time.

  • Fall Session, September 15 – December 10, 2008 (*no class the week of 11/27 in observance of Thanksgiving)
All levels meet once a week. A detailed schedule, including class dates and meeting times will be posted on The Korea Society's website in early-August and registration for the Fall Session will begin at that time.
 
 
Registration for Summer II will begin the Week of April 7. 


2008 Summer Sessions

The Korea Society’s Korean Language Program offers students the opportunity to learn Korean at six skill levels ranging from the introductory to the advanced. Starting dates and class times vary by the level of instruction.

The classes emphasize conversation, listening, reading and writing skills. Each class is offered two evenings per week for 6 weeks, totaling 21 contact hours for the semester. The instructors are native Korean speakers with advanced degrees, extensive teaching experience and university affiliations. All classes meet at The Korea Society, 950 Third Avenue, Eighth Floor, New York, NY 10022.

The tuition is $375 for members of The Korea Society and $400 for nonmembers. Tuition discounts are available to members of The Korea Society. For nonmembers, a one year membership is included in the cost of tuition. In order to guarantee a spot, the tuition must be paid in full prior to the first class meeting.

Registration for Summer Session 2008 is now open. There will be a $40 service charge for all cancellations of enrollment. No refunds or cancellations will be made after the second day of class. Click here to register.

Note: The Korea Society reserves the right to cancel any course if sufficient enrollment is not obtained. In such cases, students already enrolled will receive full refunds.

Textbooks

One textbook is required for each level. The cost is not covered by the tuition for the class. All books are available through The Korea Society for $30. It is suggested that students pre-order a copy at the time of registration.

We have adopted new textbooks for all of our classes. Beginning with the Fall 2007 semester, we will be using only the Korean language textbooks published by the Language Education Institute at Seoul National University. The following are the required textbooks for each class level:

Introductory 1 & 2: 한국어 1 (Korean Language 1)
Intermediate 1 & 2: 한국어 2 (Korean Language 2)
Advanced 1 & 2: 한국어 3 (Korean Language 3)

 
Introductory Korean I – Session I

Prerequisite: None (This course is for students with limited or no prior Korean language experience.)

Description: The course is focused on teaching elementary conversation, basic vocabulary, simple sentence structure and the Korean alphabet (han’gul).

Introductory Korean II - Session I

Prerequisite: Introductory Korean 1 (or placement exam)

Description: The course is focused on instilling a mastery of basic conversation, pronunciation, vocabulary and sentence structure. A basic familiarity with the Korean alphabet (han’gul) is a requirement for enrollment in this course.

Intermediate Korean I - Session I
Prerequisite: Introductory Korean II (or placement exam)

Description: This course is focused on expanding vocabulary, improving speaking and listening skills and promoting fluency in everyday conversations. Proficiency in reading and writing the Korean alphabet (han’gul) is a requirement for enrollment in this course.

Description: This course is focused on expanding vocabulary, improving reading and writing skills while continuing to work on enhancing conversational skills as well as mastering grammatical points. Mastery in reading and writing the Korean alphabet (han’gul) is a requirement for enrollment in this course.

Advanced Korean I - Session I

Description: Through in-class activities and homework assignments, students will enhance various kinds of interactive communication skills, both conversational and written, including the formation of complex sentences. Students also will continue to study essential grammatical patterns.

Advanced Korean II - Session I
Prerequisite: Advanced Korean I (or placement exam)

Description: This course is designed for students who have mastered basic grammar and sentence patterns. Development of speaking and listening skills is the focal point of this level of instruction. Emphasis is placed on developing speaking skills through discussion, role playing and informal presentations. The development of writing skills is also encouraged.
