Known as a traditionally male-dominated culture, the Chosǒn Kingdom limited the roles of women in politics, education, and leadership. Honor Thy Parents: Filial Piety in Chosŏn Literature

Join Dr. Mark Peterson, Professor of Korean Studies at Brigham Young University, as he speaks about the representation of filial piety in the literature of the Chosǒn Dynasty.
Mark Peterson is head of the Korean Section, Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages at Brigham Young University. Prior to his appointment at BYU in 1984, he was the director of the Fulbright program in Korea from 1978 to 1983. He is a member of the Association for Asian Studies, where he is the chair of the Korean Studies Committee, as well as the Royal Asiatic Society, the International Association for Korean Language Education, the International Korean Literature Association, and the American Association of Korean Teachers. He received a B.A. in Asian studies and anthropology from Brigham Young University in 1971 and a Ph.D. in East Asian languages and civilization from Harvard University in 1987.

Korea In Depth: Inside the Gate: An American Nun's Training Within Korean Buddhism

Bhikkuni Seon Joon Yale graduate and American Jogye Order Buddhist nun, discusses the essential elements of Korean Buddhism and the daily life of women training to become monastics in modern Korea through her personal experience and photos.
Seon Joon Sunim was born outside of Denver, Colorado. She graduated from Yale University in 2002 with a B.A. in English Language and Literature and a concentration in Creative Writing. In 2003, she moved to South Korea to pursue monastic ordination. After a year working as an English teacher, exploring the country, and a three-month retreat at Mu Sang Sa International Zen Center, she was accepted as a candidate at Heungcheon Temple in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province. She received novice precepts in 2006 and was admitted to Un Mun Monastic College in 2008; she was the first foreign monastic to be admitted into the regular program for that particular college. She graduated in January 2012 and received full precepts in April. Currently the Project Director for Dharma Raft Translation Group and a representative for the International Monastic Students' Association of Korean Buddhism, she is also a translator and amateur photographer.

Dr. Kumja Paik Kim, Curator Emerita of Korean Art at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, offers an in-depth analysis of the Confucian ideals reflected in Chosǒn paintings.
Kumja Paik Kim received her doctorate in Asian Art History from Stanford University in 1982. While teaching at San Jose State University, she was appointed in 1989 to the position of the first Curator of Korean Art at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. On June 30, 2006 she retired from the AAMSF. During her tenure at the Asian Art Museum, she curated eight Korean art exhibitions. Besides her exhibition catalogues and her book, The Art of Korea: Highlights from the Collection of San Francisco's Asian Art Museum, her articles have appeared in Artibus Asiae, Oriental Art, Orientations, Korean Culture, Korea Journal, etc. In 2007, she served as the special consultant for the new Korean Gallery at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and coordinated the MFAH's publication of the Treasures from the National Museum of Korea. Currently she is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Korean Art and Archaeology published by the National Museum of Korea, Seoul.

Today, Korean temple food, the original "slow food," has a growing international following appreciative of the healthy and simple yet flavorful fare.
