Wall murals found in tombs from the Koguryŏ Kingdom (37 BC—668 AD) offer exceptional insights into the rituals of daily life and death in ancient Korea. Join us as art historian Ah-Rim Park explores the architecture, dress, burial customs, and mythology of the time through these revealing and detailed paintings. One of few experts in the field, Park will provide a rare opportunity to learn more about the wall murals, which are still not widely documented. The complex of Koguryŏ tombs was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

About the Speaker

Professor Park teaches Korean and East Asian history at the Department of Art History at Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea. Previously, she taught at Western Michigan University and was a research fellow at Koguryŏ Research Foundation. Park is the author of Koguryŏ Tomb Murals in East Asian Funerary Art, published by Jimoondang in 2009.
