2011 Summer Fellowship in Korean Studies
Seventy American educators, led by Yong Jin Choi, Vice President of Korean Studies at The Korea Society, participated in the 2011 Summer Fellowship in Korean Studies from June 22–July 7, 2011 and July 6–20, 2011. The seventy participants consisted of 6th–12th grade Social Studies teachers and a Professor of Curriculum Development. The program required extensive background reading as well as attendance at ten seminars that took place at Korea University. Seminars were taught by Korea’s leading scholars on topics such as history, culture, society, art, education, economics, North-South relations, and language. Morning seminars were supplemented with afternoon field trips in Seoul, including visits to Insadong, the DMZ, the National Museum, and Chŏngdong Theater. The fellows enjoyed interacting with Korean high school students by teaching at Goyang Foreign Language High School and Daeil Foreign Language High School. The fellowship included a five-day field trip to the southern part of the Korean peninsula, including visits to King Sejong’s Tomb in Yŏju, Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, the Ch'ŏngju Early Printing Museum, Oksan Confucian Academy, Yangdong Village, Kyŏngju National Museum, Haeinsa, Pulguksa, and Sŏkkuram. Mark Peterson, Professor of Korean Studies at Brigham Young University, acted as docent during the field trip and lectured extensively at each site. Evenings were spent brainstorming curriculum development. Teachers from both groups were able to visit the Korean War Memorial Museum and National Folk Museum in Seoul. On their first day in Seoul, the groups were introduced to Seoul’s metropolitan transit system and had a chance to explore downtown Seoul, including a visit to Kwanghwamun Square, where some of King Sejong’s achievements are displayed, as well as a walking tour through Samch’ŏng-dong, where examples of traditional Korean architecture have been conserved. The fellows spent the rest of the extra days for independent research such as attending a shamanistic ritual, witnessing popular Korean Christianity at Yoido Full Gospel Church, crossing the Han River, visiting the Blue House, and watching the changing of the guards at Changdŏk Palace.
