Korean National Commission for UNESCO
Glocal Solidarity, Glocal Action!
August 7-17, 2008
Republic of Korea

Program Description

Held annually since 1966 by the Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU), the International Youth Camp (IYC) is an 11-day summer program that brings young people from around the world to sites throughout Korea in order to engage them with other young people of different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds and expose them to the values of international understanding and sustainable development.

This year, the IYC will be held from August 7-17 at the UNESCO Peace Center in Incheon, Korea. The theme of the 2008 IYC is "Glocal Solidarity, Glocal Action!"-emphasizing the possibilities for young people to "think globally and act locally."

Participants will arrive at the UNESCO Peace Center in Incheon where they will take part in a series of workshops and forums. Following this brief introduction to the program, participants will be divided into groups and sent to their choice of one of 10 field study sites. Located throughout South Korea, these sites require the participants to become actively involved in their particular mission-such as conservation and organic farming-each of which reflects the purpose of the IYC.

Grant Application

The Korea Society is sponsoring candidates for participation in the 43rd Annual International Youth Camp in Korea. Selected candidates will receive a scholarship to cover the $250 enrollment cost of the IYC (which in turn covers food and accommodation) and a $250 grant to help offset the cost of participants' travel to Korea.

Applicants must submit a completed UNESCO application form (available at http://youth.unesco.or.kr/iyc_eng/) along with a 600-word essay on why they wish to participate in the IYC to The Korea Society by June 20, 2008. In addition, applicants should be between 18 and 27 years old and be able to communicate effectively in English.

Please note that although the UNESCO deadline is July 1, The Korea Society requires an earlier deadline in order to select candidates for the partial travel grant and program participation fee.

Application Deadline: June 20, 2008
