History in the Classroom: U.S. Foreign Policy and Globalization

November 20, 2007

Twenty global-studies teachers from Manhattan and the Bronx called on the experience and expertise of the staff of The Korea Society in this conference, which was presented in collaboration with the New York City Department of Education. Evans J.R. Revere, president of The Korea Society, explored the current, dynamic role of South Korea in Northeast Asia, and discussed the recent past and outlook for the near future of U.S.-Korea ties--including the current impasse between the United States, North Korea and South Korea over the North's development of nuclear weapons. Against this backdrop, Fred Carriere, vice president and executive director of The Korea Society, offered an overview of the ongoing educational exchanges between Syracuse University and the Pyongyang-based Kim Chaek University of Technology. Noting how The Korea Society has been facilitating these exchanges for nearly a decade, he described some of the mutually beneficial outcomes of these educational exchanges and noted how they help in a modest way to improve relations between the U.S. and the DPRK. Rebecca Brabant, program officer for Korean studies at The Korea Society, discussed Project Bridge, and urged teachers to encourage their students to apply for this annual youth leadership program. As a final activity, Heewon Kim, program associate for the arts, guided the teachers through an exhibition of Korean funerary figures in The Korea Society Gallery.
