Amb. Thomas C. Hubbard Assumes Chairmanship
Amb_Hubbard Ambassador Thomas C. Hubbard has become chairman of The Korea Society's board of directors.  At a meeting of The Korea Society's board on September 21, 2009, Ambassador Hubbard formally assumed the chairmanship from Ambassador Donald P. Gregg.  At the meeting, the board honored Ambassador Gregg for his 16 years of exemplary service to The Korea Society, including his special role in strengthening the ties between Americans and Koreans over the years, and voted to bestow the title of "chairman emeritus" on him.


About Ambassador Hubbard:

Ambassador Thomas C. Hubbard is Senior Director at McLarty Associates in Washington, D.C., where he specializes in Asian affairs.  A career Foreign Service Officer for nearly forty years, he served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea from 2001 to 2004, and before that as Ambassador to the Philippines from 1996-2000. Earlier in his career he served seven years in Japan, and is a Japanese speaker; and was Deputy Chief of Mission and acting Ambassador in Malaysia. He held key Washington postings including Philippines desk officer, country director for Japan, and principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific affairs. Increasingly involved in Korean Peninsular affairs in the 1990s, Ambassador Hubbard was a principal negotiator of the 1994 Agreed Framework aimed at ending North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, and headed the first senior level U.S. government delegation to North Korea.  He was also President Clinton’s envoy to promote human rights and democracy in Burma.  He received his B.A. in political science in 1965 from the University of Alabama and has been awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Maryland and the University of Alabama.

Internship, Korean Studies


The Korean Studies department is currently seeking bright, enthusiastic, and dedicated interns to support education programs. These internship positions are unpaid with a flexible schedule.

Duties may include but are not limited to:
* Research potential program topics, lecturers, and presenters
* Outreach to educational networks to promote programs such as teacher’s courses, children's programs, lectures, Project Bridge, and fellowships
* Update online curriculum resources and develop new materials
* Assist with on-site program management such as room setup, registration, school visits, and more
* Assist with on-going KS projects such as documentaries and special websites

Qualifications:
* Interest or academic background in Korean Studies, History, Arts, Education
* Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Ability to take initiative and work independently
* Korean language skills are a plus

In pursuit of its mission, the Society arranges programs that facilitate discussion, exchanges and research on topics of vital interest to both countries in the areas of public policy, business, education, intercultural relations and the arts. The Korea Society’s policy program division is seeking an exceptional intern with demonstrated interest and background in the social, political, and economic issues related to the Asia-Pacific, especially Korea. We are seeking an intern with strong research/writing skills and interest in the following areas: Migration, Development, Economics, Finance, Gender Issues, Trade and Diplomacy, and Security as it relates to the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia.

Responsibilities:
Tracking and researching current developments in and around the Korean Peninsula. Writing, editing, and proofreading event transcripts and summaries, and content for the Korea Society's website; providing support for all policy and business events and programs, as well as the national outreach program on and off-site; assisting with administrative and logistical duties as needed such as database management and outreach support for events; and attending and reporting on Korea related events, conferences, meetings in New York City.

Qualifications:
* Graduate student, or exceptional undergraduate student, with previous internship or work experience preferred.
* Background in international affairs, political science and/or economics as well as an interest in Asia-Pacific issues, especially Korea
* Strong research, writing, and editing skills with excellent attention to detail
* Self-driven with a professional demeanor
* Fluency in Korean language strongly preferred

Schedule:
Internships are unpaid positions. Please note that we do not provide visa support. Candidates are required to commit to a minimum of 12 weeks, and two to three days per week, or the equivalent of 15-20 hours per week; evening availability once or twice a month for events.

Internship, Development Department


The Korea Society seeks multiple interns for Summer/Fall 2011 in its development department. The development intern will provide support for the department’s fundraising activities.


Responsibilities will include:

* updating and maintaining database records
* researching contact information for individuals and organizations
* researching new funding sources in the form of donor campaigns, corporate sponsors and foundation grants
* coordinating and implementing fundraising events
* preparing fundraising collateral
* supporting the general operations of the development department
* performing miscellaneous administrative duties

Applicants for this position must be competent in using Microsoft Office applications and capable of conducting detail-oriented Internet searches.

This is an unpaid position but is an outstanding opportunity for someone interested in learning about nonprofit development and fundraising. Class credit available. The work schedule is flexible and will be discussed during the interview.

INTERNSHIP, General

These internships afford unique opportunities to understand the inner-workings of a non-profit organization, and learn and contribute to the social, cultural, economic, political, and security dimensions of the U.S.-Korea relationship. The work schedule is flexible and will be discussed during the interview. This is an unpaid internship and that class credit is provided is applicable.


Responsibilities:
