Roundtable on the Korean Immigration Experience: Arrival in Hawaii Roundtable on the Korean Immigration Experience: Arrival in Hawaii

A wave of Korean immigrants arrived in Hawaii from 1903-1905, laying a foundation for the Korean diaspora in the United States.  Although only numbering about 7500, Korean immigrants to Hawaii were tied in important ways to U.S. and Japanese policy toward Korea at the end of the Choson dynasty.  Based on research for The Korean Frontier in America: Immigration to Hawaii, 1896-1910, professor Wayne Patterson will explore the early Korean experience in Hawaii, the challenges Korean immigrants confronted and the ties between immigration and the policies of Korea's neighbors.
