The 2009-2010 Project Bridge Youth Ambassadors are back from their grand ten-day study tour of Korea, where they explored Korea’s cultural, political, and economic centers, accompanied by 4 chaperons and 2 coordinators.

Highlights of the tour included overnight stays at Seonunsa Temple and the homes of Banpo High School students, as well as a traditional music workshop and a race-relations discussion at Korean Minjok Leadership Academy. The group also visited Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung, the National Assembly, and the Demilitarized Zone. U.S. Ambassador Kathleen Stephens greeted the Youth Ambassadors in Seoul, and they also met with Governor Wan Joo Kim of Jeollabukdo provincial government.

The Youth Ambassadors were exposed to different cultures and identities within Korea and America, and also cultivated a team spirit. As they traveled from place to place, the Youth Ambassadors looked for ways to overcome the fear of getting to know one another and new acquaintances.

Youth Ambassador Wilson Ramirez wrote about his experience:

“Before the trip I felt like I wouldn’t be able to survive in Korea because of the food and language, but I came to find out that I loved both. This taught me that you should try out different cultures before judging them or saying that you dislike another person’s way of life.”

Youth Ambassador Trishorn Plummer noted her changed views of Korea since her involvement with Project Bridge:

“I now see Korea in a whole new light. I do not see it as an unknown country or as the history other imperialist countries imposed upon it. I see it as a culture filled with a rich history untainted by those who tried to bring it down. I viewed the people as I viewed the culture: strong and resilient. And what better way to understand a culture than interacting with the people that uphold its views and live it everyday.”

To share their experiences during their six month participation in Project Bridge, including their study tour to Korea, the Youth Ambassadors will host community presentations on May 27 in New York and on May 29 in Los Angeles.
