The Korea Society awarded two scholarships for Korean language study at a university in Korea in 2009-2010, one for a summer term and one for an entire academic year. The two selected scholars received full tuition, round-trip airfare to Korea, and a stipend to cover living expenses.
Eric Drake
Eric Drake studied at the Yonsei University’s language program during the 2009 Summer semester. After finishing his master degree in anthropology at The New School in June of 2010, he plans to return to Seoul to continue a course in Korean Studies at the Graduate School of International Studies at Yonsei University.
Laura Reizman
Laura Reizman is enrolled at Seoul National University’s language program for 2009-2010 academic year. She holds a Master's degree in East Asian Studies from Columbia University. During her studies at Seoul National University, she has improved her academic reading and writing skills. She plans to continue her Ph.D. in Korean Studies, with a focus on how globalization has reshaped popular perceptions of gender, nationalism, and religion in Korea.

The benefits of the scholarship include tuition, round-trip airfare to Korea and a stipend to cover basic living expenses. One scholarship covers expenses for a summer term while the other covers expenses for the full year.
2006 Scholarship Recipients
Mark Choi was enrolled in two consecutive short-term intensive courses at Ewha University’s International Language Institute. He is currently pursuing a doctoral in the Department of Political Science at the University of California in San Diego.
Nathaniel Kretchun is currently enrolled in his second of three terms he will be attending at Yonsei University’s Korean Language Institute. He a holds a BA in economics and East Asian Studies from the University of Oklahoma.

Jonson Nathaniel Porter
A second-year doctoral student in the University of Michigan's political science department, Jonson Nathaniel Porter studies the Korean Peninsula in the context of transition politics and economics, as well as Korea's place in the comparative politics and political economy of East Asia. He holds a BA in economics from the University of California, Berkeley and has competed in Tae Kwon Do at the national collegiate level.
Michael Price
Michael Price specializes in Korean–American relations as a second-year graduate student in the International Relations and Pacific Studies Program at the University of California, San Diego.
Monica Kim
Monica Kim is a doctoral candidate in the University of Michigan's history department. Her dissertation focuses on U.S.-controlled prisoner-of-war camps during the Korean War and examines how POWs, military personnel and diplomats struggled to define "prisoner of war" in the context of the early Cold War.
In the Republic of Korea as a Fulbright research fellow, Kim conducted archival research and oral history interviews and works with the Asiatic Research Center at Korea University and the Institute of Korean Studies at Seoul University.

John Lichten is currently working towards a bachelor's degree in East Asian studies and film studies at Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. His research focuses on the relationship between Japan and Korea, its effects on the region, and its portrayal in the cinema of both countries.
Tina A. Miller
Tina A. Miller
Tina Miller is a practicing attorney in Illinois. She holds a BA in political science from Roosevelt University, an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management and a JD from DePaul University Law School in Chicago. Miller also attended a special summer program at Yonsei University's Korean Language Institute.

2005 Scholarship Recipients
Bonnie Tilland enrolled in an intensive, third-year level Korean language course at Sogang University. She is pursuing a Master's degree in Korean Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Piri Gordon enrolled in the regular summer term at Yonsei University's Korean Language Institute. She a holds a BA in economics from North Carolina State University and has extensive experience working with global banks in Asia. Gordon plans to use her developing Korean language skills and private-sector expertise to join the efforts of government and non-profit agencies working on reunification issues on the Peninsula.
