Korea in a Globalized World

Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-Soo discusses the role of Korea in a globalized world. As a strategic hub and home to Samsung, Hyundai-Kia Motors, LG Electronics, and LG Display, Gyeonggi Province recorded $41.4 billion in exports for the first half of 2010. Governor Kim will speak about developing Korea as a key economic hub in Northeast Asia and the importance of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA).

Governor Kim Moon-Soo is focused on realizing the potential of Gyeonggi and improving Korea’s global competitiveness. He has advocated eliminating unreasonable regulations in the Seoul metropolitan area, building local public transportation, expanding infrastructure to attract foreign investors, and creating jobs by attracting more foreign businesses and reinforcing the competitiveness of local small and medium-sized enterprises. Governor Kim received the Forbes Management Quality Award for public innovation in 2007 and for leadership in 2009, a distinction awarded by Forbes Korea and the Korean Society for Quality Management.

Korea Day – Pittsburgh

The Korea Society, the nation’s premiere non-profit dedicated to enhanced understanding between the peoples of the United States and Korea, presents its next Korea Day March 16 in Pittsburgh. Following on its national outreach effort in Atlanta, The Korea Society identified Pittsburgh given its emergence as a top-ten U.S. growth city, center for research and foundations, and home to over one hundred billion-dollar-plus corporations.

The Korea Days centerpiece is a luncheon discussion featuring Ambassador Thomas Hubbard, Chairman of The Korea Society, and His Excellency Han Duk-Soo, Korea’s Ambassador to the United States. Both will address From Alliance to Partnership: Free Trade and Opportunities in U.S.-Korea Relations for foundation, university, and corporate executives at The Fairmont Pittsburgh beginning at noon.

The day opens with a visit by Ambassador Mark Minton, President of The Korea Society, to Pittsburgh’s Central Catholic High School, where he will speak to faculty and students about the growing relevance of Korea on the international stage. The Society’s educational programs include teacher training, lesson-plan development, and fellowships for teachers and students. Following the school visit, a VIP reception for business and community leaders takes place at The Fairmont.

The Korea Society also will feature 10,000 Threads: Photography of Selected Works by Quilt Master Kim Haeja, which highlight works on exhibit in New York by this living cultural treasure. Kim’s specialty is nubi, the line-stitched quilted clothing of traditional Korea. Sharing in The Korea Society’s Pittsburgh programs, which showcase the best of modern and ancient Korea, is partner, the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh. Ratifying the FTA: Beyond Beef and Cars

Join Ambassador Thomas Hubbard, Chartis’ Jeffrey Hayman, J.P.Morgan’s Samuel Nam, and Citigroup’s Evan Alexander for a luncheon and panel discussion on the benefits of the KORUS FTA for the insurance industry and commercial and investment banks. The group will explore the the anticipated impact of the FTA on financial regulation relative to regulatory changes made in 2009 through the introduction of the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act (FSCMA), a very broad and forward-looking package of regulations for the financial sector. They will also discuss the practical benefits of the FTA for each industry segment and highlight FSCMA-mandated changes already under implementation.

On December 9, 2010, The Korea Society and the World Affairs Council of Atlanta presented a panel on “Doing Business with Korea” at The Commerce Club in Atlanta, Georgia. Ambassador Thomas Hubbard, Chairman of The Korea Society, moderated the panel, which included Ambassador Han Duk-soo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the United States; Mark Sobolewski, Vice-President of Corporate Strategy for UPS; Song Jung, a partner and the chair of the intellectual property and technology practice at McKenna Long & Aldridge; and John Anderson, director of Kia Motors America’s office in Washington, DC. From Security to Economic Partnership:Toward Ratification of the FTA

The Korea Society and U.S.-Korea Business Council invite you to an insightful discussion among senior national-security and business leaders on the necessity for the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA). Trade and investment between the two countries represent a significant engine of economic growth, accounting for hundreds of thousands of American and Korean jobs.

Mindful of changing dynamics and emerging trends, Korea and the United States have taken key steps toward a high-standard, market-opening KORUS FTA that have accompanied a strategic realignment of U.S. forces in Korea and efforts to address common challenges, including energy security, climate change, and nuclear security. Economic and security leaders see common cause in strengthening cooperation against a backdrop of the FTA. The June 2 noon dialogue will be the first in a series of activities at The Korea Society marking the significance of the Korea-U.S. relationship on the sixtieth anniversary of the start of the Korean War.

Of Touchscreens and Clouds: Korea’s Competitive Edge

As South Korea goes, so goes the world in cell phone, flat screen, and broadband technologies. Where will the Korean bellwether move next? Korean stock-market specialist and fund-manager Henry Seggerman sees Korean adoption of two technologies—touchscreens and “cloud computing”—as portentous of a seismic shift in how people will use computers around the world, as well as an opportunity for Korean companies to become a driving force in their growth. Already, Apple Computer’s iPad and acquisition of Lala.com are telling evidence of the global technology industry’s recognition of the transformative power of touch interfaces and “the cloud.”
