William Rhodes, retired senior advisor at Citigroup and board member of The Korea Society, will discuss his newly released Banker to the World on July 21 at noon. Ambassador Thomas Hubbard, chairman of The Korea Society, will moderate the discussion as Rhodes reflects on decades of experience in international finance, especially the lessons learned in Korea during the financial crisis of the late 1990s. On July 19, Bill Rhodes will accept The Korea Society’s 2011 Van Fleet Award on behalf of the U.S.-Korea Business Council, an organization that has contributed to the business and economic exchange between Korea and the United States.

Rhodes was lauded for his skills at international financial diplomacy in the 1980’s, following his handling of the Latin American debt crisis. He headed the advisory committees of international banks negotiating restructuring agreements across Latin America and the Caribbean. In 1998, when the Republic of Korea experienced liquidity problems, he chaired the international banking group that negotiated the extension of the short-term debt of the Korean banking system.

Innovation in Korean Capital Markets

2011 06 23 KCIF icon

President of the Korea Capital Market Institute, Dr. Hyoung-Tae Kim, addresses recent innovations in the Korean financial environment. Dr. Kim discusses the birth of hedge funds, the Korean derivative markets, and reforms affecting investment banks operating in the various Korean markets. The discussion will be moderated by Charles T. Kimball, Managing Director of the Korea Center for International Finance.

The Global Financial Crisis of 2008 tilted the financial landscape in the direction of a number of regulatory reforms initiated by the G20 and related working groups. Korea’s increasing linkage to global financial markets put her among the leadership of the organizations working together to strengthen prudential regulations and lower systemic risks.

Korea has renewed its commitment to sponsoring a competitive financial services industry by undertaking a revision of the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act. The Act was introduced in 2007 with a view to promote financial innovation and fair competition in the Korea’s capital markets. The introduction of hedge funds into the Korean marketplace has been the subject of a great deal of focus by all participants. Dr. Kim’s presentation sheds light on the international financial regulatory environment and some key issues for Korea.

Korea Capital Market Institute (KCMI) was established to contribute to the development of the securities industry and to the growth of the national economy by providing research on the securities market, industry, and policy. As the premier capital markets think tank in Korea, KCMI is devoted to the advancement of Korea’s capital markets. Its research encompasses a broad range of companies operating in the financial services industries, such as securities firms, asset management firms, and futures traders. KCMI also conducts research on complex financial groups such as financial holding companies, private equity and venture-capital investment firms, buyout funds, and financial products such as stocks, bonds, and derivatives. Research by KCMI also extends to financial services providers like exchanges, payment, and settlement systems.
