An Evening with Chef Esther Choi of Mokbar

Esther Choi, owner and chef of Mŏkbar , will share her remarkable and entrepreneurial journey from pharmacy student to restaurant owner. Winning the Village Voice Readers’ Choice Best New Restaurant in 2014, Mŏkbar has become one of New York’s go-to Korean noodle shops since opening in Chelsea Market a year ago.

Chef Esther is a young and talented chef on a mission to popularize Korean food. She fuses authentic Korean ingredients and old family recipes with an American twist to create her own unique style of Korean soul food! The result is Korean flavored ramen noodles inspired by traditional dishes such as kimchijigae, bibimbap, naengmyeon, and miyeokgook. Renowned for her homemade kimchis, she even coined the term “kimchify” as she can ferment almost any vegetable in the Korean style. Chef Esther’s kimchi is essential to many of the menu items offered at Mŏkbar, providing the “soul” in her cuisine.

She will be joined by moderator Leiti Hsu, the producer and host of WORD OF MOUTH with Leiti Hsu on Heritage Radio Network, who eats and networks for a living. Chef Esther will also demonstrate how to make her version of tteobokki (spicy rice cake), followed by a tasting. A not-to-be-missed event for young professional foodies!

2015 06 11 mokbar esther-choiEsther Choi, the chef and owner of mŏkbar, grew up cooking traditional Korean food with her grandmother. Born in New Jersey and having spent part of her younger years in Korea, Esther further received professional training as a chef at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) as well as at ilili, La Esquina and Food Network in New York. Her diverse experiences across continents and cuisines, and strong Korean roots, drive Esther’s unique approach to sharing her passion for food.

Esther: “I grew up cooking with my grandma. She taught me everything I know about food – how to love every ingredient, appreciate and respect the process and making of every dish. That is what Korean food is about: dedication and passing on that kind of love to people. I think that is where my passion derived from. To me, Korean food is not just about cooking and being a chef, it is really about my family, culture and who I am. I have been working in restaurants since I was 14 years old and since then have always been in love with the industry. I probably worked every job there is in a restaurant, whether it be front-of-house or back-of-house. Over the years I realized that it was not just a job anymore, my love and passion for food grew everyday. Opening my own restaurant is not a coincidence. It has been in my blood and bones forever. Being able to show my food to New York has always been a dream.“

Opening Night with Rostarr

KAFFNY (Korean American Film Festival New York), in partnership with The Korea Society, will open its 8th annual film festival with an opening-night party that features the artwork of Rostarr . The artist’s film, Kill the Ego, produced in collaboration with Soundwalk Collective, will be screened at the Wythe Hotel’s cinema. Afterwards, guests may enjoy a one-hour open bar and party and view the exhibit of Rostarr’s art in the private dining room, which will be open throughout the festival weekend.

Navigating the Art World: from Curating to Intellectual Property

The Korea Society, in partnership with KOTRA, hosts a practical-but-entertaining discussion on the essentials of art collecting, art curating, and art-related intellectual property issues such as copyrights, branding, and ownership rights. The afternoon’s panel features Christina Heekyung Kang, noted art collector and president of Paradigm Art;  Jonathan Sirota, entertainment, art, and intellectual property attorney; and  Inhee Moon, a well-known Korean art curator. These experts and pioneers in their respective fields will share both the challenges and rewards of managing an art-related business and also impart useful art market  information, helpful tips on collecting, and an insider’s view of the art world in both Korea and New York.  A reception follows for networking with fellow art lovers and panelists.

Summer Jazz Night with Sangmin Lee

Join us for a cool summer night of inventive jazz fusion with the Sangmin Lee Group, led by renowned Korean jazz artist, drummer, and composer Sangmin Lee. Sit back and listen as the group performs Sangmin Lee’s non-traditional and eclectic original compositions. Lee provides introductions to each arrangement, and will explain his inspirations, musical influences, and technique.  

After the performance, Lee, one of Korea’s most sought-after session drummers, will share his experiences playing with Rain and many other famous Korean musicians, as well as what brought him to the U.S. and New York City. Then mingle with the musicians at the wine and cheese reception!

An Evening of Contemporary Asian Art

Join us at Coohaus Art for a reception; private tour of the art exhibition, Camera Lucida Revisited; and an introductory talk on contemporary Asian art — some of the most vibrant and exciting art being created today. Our hosts, art professors Dr. Deborah Seleeby-Mulligan and Dr. Kyunghee Pyun, will provide a brief explanation of the exhibit and an overview of the contemporary Asian art market, focusing primarily on Korea. They will identify several of the leading and emerging artists (especially those working in New York City), as well as notable collectors, and explain why the market has grown exponentially in recent years.

Over the last 15 years, Jung-kyu Kim has traveled extensively throughout Asia and worked in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Singapore. In 2008, he was one of the founding directors of ACA Investments, a Pan-Asian private equity firm headquartered in Singapore, and has a unique perspective on the development of the private-equity industry in Asia. Join us as Jung-kyu Kim discusses the latest investment trends and shares his refreshingly different views on private equity in various Asian markets.


Jung-kyu will also introduce his new book, The Great Equal Society, which he co-authored with renowned philosopher Young-oak Kim. He will explain why Confucianism may hold the key to solving China’s challenges in the 21st century and also examine how its timeless wisdom can be applied to current issues in the West, like the growing income gap and ethical lapses on Wall Street. Jung-kyu Kim is director of ACA Investments, a Pan-Asian private equity firm headquartered in Singapore. He has advised investmentors in various sectors including clean technology, media, IT, and healthcare, and has chaired and spoken at several regional private equity conferences. He is also a trilingual writer who has published works in English, Japanese, and Korean. He started his career at the Tokyo office of McKinsey & Company as a management consultant. He received a B.A. in Government from Harvard University and an MBA from INSEAD.

Eun S. Cho works in asset management as a Portfolio Manager with Victory Capital Management Inc., an asset management firm with $19 billion under management. Mr. Cho focuses on non-US small to mid cap companies with a focus on Emerging Markets . Prior to joining Victory, Mr. Cho worked as an analyst at Franklin Global Advisors where he specialized in Asia-Pacific small cap companies. Mr. Cho studied at both Columbia University, where he received a B.S. degree in Operations Research, and Jacksonville University, where he earned a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics. Mr. Cho has been involved with KACF from 2004, and served as co-chair of the fundraising committee of the KACF’s Steering Committee from 2005-2009. Mr. Cho also sits on the Board of Directors for Beyond the Boroughs, an organization providing scholarships to students. In addition, Mr. Cho serves as a Board member of the Columbia Engineering Development Council.
