Educators are encouraged to apply for the 2015 Summer Fellowship in Korean Studies. This year, the program is conducted in conjunction with the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia, PA. Participants get an intimate view of Korea through visits to the DMZ, Buddhist Temples, and early historical sites.

2015 Summer Fellowship

For full-time Social Studies Teachers, Curriculum Coordinators, or Supervisors of programs involving Korean history and culture

Thirty finalists receive:

• Study Tour of South Korea from August 18 to August 26 (approximate dates)

• Stipend of $800 to cover all or most transportation costs to South Korea

• Transportation throughout Korea, hotel accommodations, and most meals

• Teaching materials and other academic materials about Korea and US/Korea Relations

• Guides, speakers, admissions, and more!

 

REQUIREMENTS:

To apply, you must be a full-time social studies teacher, curriculum coordinator, or supervisor of a program involving Korean history and culture. Applicants commit to developing a lesson plan or unit of study on the Korean War, contemporary issues, or US-Korean relations. Upon acceptance, a refundable-deposit of $100 is required. Deposits are refunded upon the completion of the Lesson Plan/Unit of Study.

Participants should be in good health, hikes and walking tours may be strenuous at times and summer temperatures can be very hot. Finalists should bring spending money for souvenirs, occasional lunches, laundry, phone calls, and incidentals.

Attendance is required at all activities and programs.

The Korea Society welcomes applications for the 11th annual Spring Fellowship in Korean Studies. This expense-paid program in Korea will include lectures, guided tours, and opportunities for on-site study in locales of historic and contemporary significance. This program is made possible through the generous financial support of the Freeman Foundation and the Academy of Korean Studies.

 

Eligibility

Applications are welcomed from anyone who meets one or more of the following eligibility criteria:

 

1) state or school district supervisors and curriculum coordinators

2) elementary and secondary school textbook writers

3) textbook publishing company editors and supervisors

4) elementary and secondary teachers (social studies, history, geography, art, and literature)

The Korea Society is pleased to announce its 19th annual Fall Fellowship in Korean Studies program to be held in Korea November 10-19, 2014, in collaboration with the Academy of Korean Studies. The objective of the program is to provide a general overview of Korea, past and present. All the expenses of the participants will be covered, including round-trip international airfare, accommodations, and meals.

ELIGIBILITY

Applications are requested from American educators who are professionally engaged as textbook writers and editors, and East Asia specialists in higher education who would like to include Korea in their teaching, research, or writing. Priority consideration will be given to applicants who are planning to author textbooks on world history or Asian history, those who contribute articles to reference works, and those who will be editors of such works.

 

ACTIVITIES

The program will begin in Seoul with lectures, field trips, and discussion meetings, followed by a docent-led tour to major points of interest throughout the southern part of the Korean peninsula. Lectures will be delivered by prominent scholars from leading Korean universities on topics such as economic development and the politics of a divided country. There will be a session to exchange information about Korea regarding curriculum development or textbook writing. The field trips during this initial phase of the program will take participants to places of historical and cultural significance in the Seoul area, including royal palaces, the royal ancestral shrine, museums, and historical districts. In the second phase of the program, the participants will travel to various points of interest throughout the southern part of the Korean peninsula on an extended docent tour.

 

Dr. Mark Peterson of Brigham Young University, a distinguished expert on Korean history and culture, will serve as a docent throughout the entire program. He will lecture informally on topics related to Korean history, society, and literature, as well as the impact of Shamanism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Christianity on the Korean people.

The program will include lectures and discussions on topics of current interest, guided tours and opportunities for on-site study in locales of historic and contemporary relevance in Korea. It is made possible by financial support from the Freeman Foundation and the Academy of Korean Studies in Korea.

ELIGIBILITY

Applications are welcomed from anyone who qualifies under one or more of the following eligibility criteria: 1) administrators of instructional resources in a state department of education; 2) educators who implement the outreach educational programs in East Asia; 3) alumni/ae of The Korea Society’s Summer Fellowship in Korean Studies program, provided they have not visited Korea under the auspices of an organized study tour for at least the last three years. Preference will be given to applicants whose statement of purpose best matches the eligibility criteria for the category in which they are applying. Held in Korea June 26-July 7, 2013

The Korea Society is pleased to announce openings for American educators to participate in the 2013 Summer Fellowship in Korean Studies to be held in Korea June 26-July 7, 2013. The application deadline is April 10, 2013. Fellows participate in a 12-day, expenses-paid study tour of Korea during which they visit a high school, museums, and sites of historical and cultural interest. Lectures on Korean history, culture, politics, economics, arts, and language are provided by university faculty. This unparalleled learning experience and unique opportunity for extensive travel within Korea is open to middle-school and high-school social-studies and world-history teachers.

Thanks to the generous support of the Korea Foundation, the 2013 program can accommodate 40 American educators. Three days of the study tour are also sponsored by the Freeman Foundation. Applicants are solely responsible for the cost of domestic airfare to either JFK or LAX.

Preference will be given to applicants who have a demonstrated ability to adapt to new cultural settings and meet the academic demands of an intensive study/travel program. Some prior familiarity with Korean culture and history also is highly desirable.
