Dr. Jim Yong Kim
President
World Bank Group
Jim Yong Kim, M.D., Ph.D., became the 12th President of the World Bank Group on July 1, 2012. A physician and anthropologist, Dr. Kim has dedicated himself to international development for more than two decades, helping to improve the lives of under-served populations worldwide. Dr. Kim comes to the Bank after serving as President of Dartmouth College, a pre-eminent center of higher education that consistently ranks among the top academic institutions in the United States. Dr. Kim is a co-founder of Partners In Health (PIH) and a former director of the HIV/AIDS Department at the World Health Organization (WHO).
As President of Dartmouth – an institution that comprises a liberal arts college and professional schools of medicine, engineering and business, as well as 19 graduate programs in the arts and sciences, a staff and faculty of 3,300, and a budget of $700 million – Dr. Kim earned praise for reducing a financial deficit without cutting any academic programs. Dr. Kim also founded the Dartmouth Center for Health Care Delivery Science, a multidisciplinary institute dedicated to developing new models of health care delivery and achieving better health outcomes at lower costs.
Before assuming the Dartmouth presidency, Dr. Kim held professorships and chaired departments at Harvard Medical School, the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston. He also served as director of Harvard’s François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights.
In 1987, Dr. Kim co-founded Partners In Health, a Boston-based non-profit organization now working in poor communities on 4 continents. Challenging previous conventional wisdom that drug-resistant tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS could not be treated in developing countries, PIH successfully tackled these diseases by integrating large-scale treatment programs into community-based primary care.
As Director of the World Health Organization’s HIV/AIDS Department, Dr. Kim led the ‘3 by 5’ initiative, the first-ever global goal for AIDS treatment, which sought to treat 3 million new HIV/AIDS patients in developing countries with antiretroviral drugs by 2005. Launched in September 2003, the ambitious program ultimately reached its goal by 2007.
Dr. Kim’s work has earned him wide recognition. He was awarded a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship (2003), was named one of America’s “25 Best Leaders” by U.S. News & World Report (2005), and was selected as one of TIME magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” (2006).
Born in 1959 in Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Kim moved with his family to the United States at the age of five and grew up in Muscatine, Iowa. Dr. Kim graduated with an A.B. magna cum laude from Brown University in 1982. He earned an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1991 and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard University in 1993.

Dr. Ho Youn Kim
Founder of the Kim Koo Foundation

Ho Youn Kim is the founder of the Kim Koo Foundation, which he established in honor of Kim Koo (1876-1949), the Premier of the Korean Provisional Government and the Korean national, in all major polls, admired the most by fellow Koreans. He is Chairman and CEO of Binggrae Corporation Ltd., a major producer of food and beverages in Korea. He is also chairman of Adan Library, which stores one of the most extensive archives on early modern and modern Korean literature, including several pieces of Korean National Treasure. He is also chairman of the Republic of Korea Air Force History Foundation. Dr. Kim is former ROK National Assemblyman and member of the National Assembly Committee on Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Unification.
Dr. Kim transformed Binggrae into a model corporation with high profit rates and a high degree of financial stability. For his leadership, he was awarded the Order of the Silver Tower in 2011, CEO of the Year 2004 by the Korea Management Association, and the Order of Civil Merit by the Republic of Korea’s government. Binggrae products are sold widely beyond Korea’s borders, in the U.S., Canada, South America, China, Russia, and throughout Southeast Asia.
To better present Korean history and culture to an international body of students, scholars, and practitioners in the United States, the Kim Koo Foundation has established the following programs: Kim Koo Visiting Professorship (2004) and Kim Koo Forum on U.S.-Korea Relations at the Korea Institute, Harvard University (2005); Kim Koo Library at the Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University (2009); Kim Koo Chair in Korean Studies at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University (2012); and the Kim Koo Professional Series at The Korea Society. The Harvard Kim Koo Forum, a seminar series on Korea, peace and security in Northeast Asia, East Asian history and culture, has played an important role in advancing mutual understanding and knowledge between Korea and the U.S. Former speakers at the Forum include President Park Geun Hye, former President Kim Dae Jung, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and former U.S. Ambassadors to Seoul Stephen Bosworth, Thomas Hubbard, and Kathleen Stephens.
In 2014, Dr. Kim, a former officer of the Air Force, became the inaugural chairman of the ROK Air Force History Foundation, which sheds a new light on the history of cooperation between the ROK and U.S. air forces through hosting conferences and related programs. A recent conference featured former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force Ronald R. Fogleman and former Commander of the Seventh Air Force Stephen G. Wood.
Dr. Kim is Goodwill Ambassador of Habitat for Humanity Korea. Since 2001, he has participated each year with his family in volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity within Korea and overseas. Dr. Kim’s philanthropy extends widely to supporting food banks, Save the Children, orphanages, student scholarships, descendants of Korean independence fighters, the disabled, and retirement communities. He is an honorary board member of the Midwest Young Artists, the largest youth ensemble music program in the Midwest, and a member of the Asian Advisory Group of the Fletcher School, Tufts University.
Dr. Kim received his bachelor’s in management from Sogang University in 1979, master’s in economics from Hitotsubashi University in 1985, and doctorate in management from Sogang University in 2006. In recognition of his active involvement in and support for civil diplomacy, Dr. Kim was awarded the Order of Altan Gadas (Polar Star) from Mongolia, and I’ordre du Mérite Agricole from France, the highest awards given to foreign nationals by the respective governments.

CONTEMPORARY PANSORI
Pansori Singer: Jin-Taek Lim
Drummer: Kyu-Ho Lee
Paikbum Kim Koo is a contemporary work of pansori, the traditional Korean vocal performance, registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, that features a singer accompanied by a drummer. The composer of this contemporary piece is the famed singer and director Jin-Taek Lim, one of the few artists who composes both the libretto and music of pansori and also performs. Paikbum Kim Koo had its premiere in Korea in 2010.
On August 7, 1945, Kim Koo, Premier of the Korean Provisional Government, finalized a plan for combined military operations between the Korean Liberation Army and the U.S. military with General William J. Donovan, chief of the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. This was the first de-facto Korea-U.S. military alliance. The excerpts from Paikbum Kim Koo that will be performed feature this historical event.

Esther Choi, the chef and owner of mŏkbar, grew up cooking traditional Korean food with her grandmother. Born in New Jersey and having spent part of her younger years in Korea, Esther further received professional training as a chef at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) as well as at ilili, La Esquina and Food Network in New York. Her diverse experiences across continents and cuisines, and strong Korean roots, drive Esther’s unique approach to sharing her passion for food.
Leiti Hsu hosts the weekly live show WORD OF MOUTH with Leiti Hsu on Heritage Radio Network, where she gets real with star-studded chefs, sommeliers and restaurateurs from around the world about what really matters in life: love, fear, business, pleasure.
