The role of medical doctors is important now more than ever in this pandemic era. The impact of influential Youtubers is also increasing, as the public heavily relies on the platform to obtain and share information. Yet it is rare to use both the titles of Doctor and Youtube creator to describe one person’s career like Dr. Jang’s.

The Korea Society is excited to welcome Dr. Ezra Hangjun Jang, Internal medicine specialist and renowned host of the Youtube channel, “Dr. Ezra Hangjun Jang”. Dr. Jang has amassed a significant YouTube following with more than 525,000 subscribers, allowing for a substantial audience to learn crucial information from each of his videos.

Join us as we listen to Dr. Jang’s insights on educating audiences through his Youtube Channel on healthcare matters during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Jang will also highlight his career developments in becoming a doctor as well as a star Youtuber in the U.S.

About the Speaker:

 
Dr. Ezra Hangjun Jang
 

Doctor Ezra Hangjun Jang is a naturalized Korean American physician, President of the youtube channel, Dr. Ezra Hangjun Jang TV, and CEO who works at Ezra Medical Care PC, Harlem Firstaid Medical PC, and Riverside Health Care LLC.

Dr. Jang was born in Seoul, South Korea. After graduating from Hanyang University School of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea, in 1996, after three years of military duty, he came to the United States with his American wife. Dr. Jang enrolled in chemistry graduate school of New York University (NYU) in 2002. In his third year of graduate study at NYU, he started as a medical resident in Brookdale University Hospital, Brooklyn, in 2005. Since then, Dr. Jang has pursued MD, Ph.D. dual degree track. He successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on August 31, 2007, under the mentoring of Kent Kirshenbaum. During the graduate study, Dr. Jang published three articles in peer-reviewed journals, and his study focused on the functionalization of a peptidomimetic scaffold. He was a first-person who first successfully conjugated nucleobase into a peptidomimetic scaffold peptoid using azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions. Dr. Jang published as the first author of this work in Organic Letters (Org. Lett. 2005, 7, 10, 1951-1954). He also was a recipient of the Golden Dozen Teaching Award in NYU’s College of Arts and Science in 2004. Dr. Jang graduated with a Ph.D. in chemistry from NYU on May 14, 2008. After completing a three-year residency in Brookdale, he became a board-certified internist and a physician in New York in 2009. Dr. Jang had served New York Hospital Queens as a primary care physician in the ambulatory care clinic at 39th ave, Flushing, NY 2009 through 2011. He incorporated his medical organization – Harlem Firstaid Medical PC, Ezra Medical Care PC at 15009 Northern Blvd, Flushing, NY in 2012. He also formed Riverside Health Care LLC in 115 Broad Ave, Palisades Park, NJ, in April 2021.


About the Moderator:

 
Dr. John Yoo
 

Dr. John Yoo was born in South Korea and immigrated to the US at age 4 with his parents and older brother. 5 years later, at age 9, John and his family were scheduled to move back to Korea to follow their father’s job location, but a young Dr. Yoo and his brother insisted they would study in the US instead. Their parents took a leap of faith and embarked on what would become a 10 year “gireogi” status with their father working overseas, and their mother looking after the kids in the US. Vowing to make their parents’ immense sacrifice worthwhile, both brothers promised each other to work their hardest to make their dreams come true.

Dr. Yoo’s brother (Dr. Eric Yoo) went on to match to his dream medical specialty in Gastroenterology, but Dr. Yoo debated whether to go into medicine, dentistry, or… K-Pop. After much deliberation, he decided to pursue his studies and combine both his love for the arts with healthcare, and found dentistry to be the healthy intersection of all his interests. At Columbia Dental, he received the Outstanding Student Leader Award from the American College of Dentists for exceptional leadership, scholarship, and service commitment to his community. From college to his pediatric dental residency training at Jacobi Medical Center, Dr. Yoo tutored students from around the world through an online classroom, and discovered a passion and knack for working specifically with the pediatric population. His videos on pediatric patient management and strategies have garnered him recent internet fame, amassing over 150 million views across platforms.

Dr. Yoo has been featured on numerous social media channels and has lectured to students on topics ranging from pediatric behavior management, dental school and applications, dental residency, and social media. After graduating from residency, Dr. Yoo teamed up with Columbia colleagues to build Beam City Dental Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in Fort Lee, NJ, where he now works as a full-time pediatric dentist and co-owner.

Dr. Yoo has been involved in numerous Korean organizations including Korean American Scientists and Engineers Association, Korean American Students Association (Former Duke Chapter Founder/President), and Korean American Dental Students Association (Former Columbia President). During his downtime, Dr. Yoo enjoys making YouTube videos with his best friend on channel JBRO, working out, golfing, traveling, personal training, and singing. Dr. Yoo has participated in dental missions to Brazil, Peru, Panama, Jamaica, and Cambodia, and is eager to treat more children around the world along the way.

Food writer Eric Kim is known for sharing recipes accompanied with thoughtful storytelling and reflection. At first Kim pursued academia, teaching undergraduate literature courses while working towards a PhD in American Literature at Columbia. He unexpectedly found his path to success by writing and curating content for leading publishers in food media such as Food Network, Food52, and Saveur. Today, Kim is a staff writer at the New York Times and next year he will release his highly-anticipated debut cookbook Korean American: Food That Tastes Like Home. Join us as Kim reflects on his career in food journalism, multimedia content creation, and book publishing.

He worked his way through the literary and culinary world to eventually become a digital manager at Food Network and a senior editor at Food52, where he amassed a devoted readership for his “Table for One” column. He now hosts regular videos on NYT Cooking’s YouTube channel. A former contributing editor at Saveur, Eric taught writing and literature at Columbia University, and his work has been featured in The Washington Post, Bon Appétit, and Food & Wine. Grace is also a cofounder of Asian American Collective, a networking and mentoring collective for Asian Americans in the music industry. Grace regularly participates in key industry events and panels with organizations such as Women in Music, Music Business Association, the Asian American Advertising Federation and Upworthy, and has served as a juror for Clio Music. She has also been invited to speak at Universal Music Group and Harvard Business School. In her free time, Grace is an avid home cook and has had a recipe published in the New York Times.

Yul Kwon is Senior Director of Product Management and Chief-of-Staff to the Chief Legal Officer at Google, where he was the product lead for Google’s Exposure Notifications (i.e., digital contract tracing) project in partnership with Apple.

Yul’s earlier private sector experiences include working as a Director of Product Management at Facebook, a management consultant at McKinsey, an attorney at Venture Law Group, and the owner/operator of Red Mango frozen yogurt retail stores.

In the public sector, Yul’s government experiences include serving as Deputy Chief of the FCC’s Consumer & Governmental Affairs Bureau, an adjunct instructor at the FBI Academy, a legislative counsel in the U.S Senate, and a judicial clerk in the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals.

Yul hosted the PBS series, America Revealed, and anchored KCETLink’s weekly news program, LinkAsia, from 2011-2013. His other work on television includes hosting programs for CNN, Discovery Channel, and Smithsonian Channel. In 2006, Yul became the first Asian American winner of the CBS reality show, Survivor. He returned in 2020 to participate in the 40th season of Survivor, Winners at War.

Yul received his B.S. in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and his J.D. from Yale Law School, where he served on the editorial board of the Yale Law Journal.

Nelson Chai

Nelson brings more than a decade of experience in senior positions at some of the world’s leading publicly traded financial services and insurance companies. He joined Uber from the Chicago-based Warranty Group, an insurance and warranty provider, where he was CEO.

Previously, he spent more than 5 years at CIT Group, where he most recently served as President. Before that, he was Chief Financial Officer of Merrill Lynch & Co.; NYSE Euronext, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange; and Archipelago Holdings, the first fully electronic stock exchange in the United States.

Nelson serves on the boards of Thermo Fisher Scientific, the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences, and the US Fund for UNICEF. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School.

After joining Bank of America Merrill Lynch, he relocated back to NY as COO, Global Markets and served as head of Global Rates & Currencies Origination. In Asia, Mike was involved in various advisory and financing projects for the Korean government and received a distinction from the Korean government for his contributions during the Asian financial crisis. Mike is currently a board member of Korea Finance Society and received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from MIT.

Sandor Hau

Sandor Hau is a Managing Director with Charlesbank Capital Partners and oversees the firm’s opportunistic credit investing. He joined the firm from Nomura Securities, where he was a managing director and head of corporate credit and special situations. Previously, he was a managing director at Goldman Sachs and head of credit investing and private equity within the principal strategies group. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He was also a Rotary Scholar at Yonsei University in South Korea. Sandor lives in Rye, New York with his wife and four children. He serves as co-chairman of the Korea Finance Society and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Susan currently serves on the board of directors for the Council of Korean Americans and she previously served as a founding board member of the Korean-American Community Foundation of San Francisco.

Susan received her MBA from Harvard Business School and her BA from Harvard College.

A Korean American entrepreneur Dawoon Kang, Co-founder and Chief Dating Officer of CMB, will share her knowledge on starting new business, marketing insights, and practical advice to young professionals interested in establishing their own business. We will also explore the art of online dating while social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion will be led by a moderator Sang Lee, President of Korean Startups & Entrepreneurs (KSE) and CEO of Darc Matter, followed by a Q&A session.


The Korea Society is excited to present this Young Professionals’ Night webcast in partnership with the Korean Startups & Entrepreneurs (KSE). Dawoon’s work spans from strategy & business development to marketing, research and investing/finance. She started her career at Avon Products as Analyst for U.S. Strategy & Business Development in NewYork. In this role, she worked closely with the U.S. senior leadership team to lead & execute strategic initiatives designed to support company’s short and long term growth targets. After receiving her MBA from Stanford Graduate School Business in 2009, she went on to J.P. Morgan’s Global Special Opportunities Group in Hong Kong. She worked as Vice President North Asia Investment team, which covered all investments in Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, from distressed debt to growth equity opportunities. In 2012, Dawoon co-founded Coffee Meets Bagel along with her sisters Arum and Soo. As COO & Head of Marketing, Dawoon oversees the company’s overall vision, strategy, branding, and marketing. She has given numerous talks about dating and tech to groups such as Women 2.0, The Korea Society in New York and including a recent TED x talk with Arum in San Francisco on the theme Redefining Normal.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

  Wansoo Suh

A NYC based conference interpreter/translator with over 25 years of experience in Korean-English and English-Korean practice. Wansoo Suh has covered various fields including international relations, IT, finance, intellectual property rights, and the arts, and has worked closely with global companies, governments, educational institutes, and the media industry. Her clients have included the United Nations, Apple, Dell, KEPCO, Citibank, Samsung, international law firms, the Guggenheim Museum, as well as The Korea Society with their recent interview with Dr. Kim Woo Joo on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wansoo received a Master’s Degree in Interpretation and Translation from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, studied at the Graduate School of Film Studies at Dongguk University, and has a Bachelor’s Degree from Ewha Women’s University. She was a full-time lecturer at the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation at Ewha Women’s University, and also taught at Hankook University of Foreign Studies(HUFS) at the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation and the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security of Korea. She was the official interpreter for the Pusan International Film Festival, an English announcer for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, and received the Presidential Citation from the Republic of Korea.

 

ABOUT THE MODERATOR

  Janet Cushey is a project and event manager at Argot Partners and has operated her own small English tutoring and Korean-to-English translation service, Patch English, since 2016. Her main interests are Korean language, international cultural exchange, and Korean music and media. She moved to New York City in 2014 and has been pursuing Korean language learning through the Korea Society’s Korean Language classes. Before moving to New York, she resided in Seoul where she taught English at an after-school academy and volunteered as a language tutor for North Korean refugees at Liberty in North Korea. Janet graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in East Asian Studies, focused on Korean Language and Cultural Studies. She spent one year of her undergraduate studies abroad at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea.
