A Talk with Jung-Kyu Kim

2014 02 07 brownbag kim icon-black

Over the last 15 years, Jung-kyu Kim has traveled extensively throughout Asia and worked in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Singapore. In 2008, he was one of the founding directors of ACA Investments, a Pan-Asian private equity firm headquartered in Singapore, and has a unique perspective on the development of the private-equity industry in Asia. Join us as Jung-kyu Kim discusses the latest investment trends and shares his refreshingly different views on private equity in various Asian markets.

Jung-kyu will also introduce his new book, The Great Equal Society, which he co-authored with renowned philosopher Young-oak Kim. He will explain why Confucianism may hold the key to solving China’s challenges in the 21st century and also examine how its timeless wisdom can be applied to current issues in the West, like the growing income gap and ethical lapses on Wall Street. From the practical to the philosophical, if you’re doing business in Asia, you will find this discussion relevant, as well as thought-provoking.

The Great Equal Society: Introducing Confucianism To The 21st Century
The most prominent thinker in Korea, Young-oak Kim, teams up with talented writer Jung-kyu Kim to finally reveal what Confucianism is all about – and to show its relevance in the ultramodern context of 21st -century China and the US. Confucianism is the guiding creed for a quarter of mankind, yet hardly anyone has explained it in plain terms – until now. Written in a style both intelligible and enjoyable for the global audience, The Great Equal Society distills the core ideas of the major Confucian classics and shows how their timeless wisdom can be applied to today’s world. It also introduces pragmatic suggestions emanating from Confucius and his followers for ensuring good governance, building a humane economy, and educating moral leaders.

An Evening with Martin E. Kim

2013 11 18 martin icon

What are Major League Baseball contract negotiations like from the inside? How do you market a popular Korean confectionery, the Choco Pie,  to Americans? What are ace pitcher Ryu Hyun-Jin and manager Don Mattingly like in person? Martin Kim has the answers!

Martin has spent his professional career in marketing and international business, promoting Korean brands in the US. He has worked for the US Department of Commerce and CJ Entertainment, and landed his dream job working for the Los Angeles Dodgers as manager of “Korean Affairs and Corporate Partnerships.” He negotiated partnerships with Korean corporations like Hite Brewery Company and Orion Confectionery to bring Hite beer and Choco Pies to Dodger Stadium—and he brought Psy to the stadium to dance  “Gangnam Style” when he had only 40 million views. Martin was also instrumental in bringing Ryu to the Dodgers and serves as his interpreter and guide to living in the U.S.

Martin will discuss the promotion of Korean brands in the US, the establishment of international partnerships, and what it takes to be successful in the sports and entertainment industry. He’ll also provide an insider’s look at major league baseball and tell us what it’s like to shadow Ryu. Kevin Kim, co-host of the popular T.V. talk show, The Portfolio, joins us as the moderator for the evening. Following the discussion, stay for franks, choco pies, and Korean beer. Our season is not over!

Foul King

The top Korean domestic film of 2000, Foul King is one of the earliest films of Kim Ji-woon, who most recently directed Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Last Stand. Starring  Song Kang-Ho as an unproductive bank clerk suffering through the grind of his miserable 9 to 5 existence, he eventually finds an outlet for his frustrations by moonlighting as a professional wrestler. He is slowly transformed as he begins his second job as the cheating villain wrestler known as the Foul King.

Foul King, equal parts social commentary, comedy, drama, and sports action, is a great example of South Korean genre-bending, for which South Korean cinema is best known.

International Film Premiere of Secretly Greatly

2013 07 11 SecretlyGreatly icon

The Korea Society’s Young Professionals’ Network is invited to the New York Asian Film Festival 2013’s closing night presentation of Secretly Greatly. Based on the webtoon series “Covertness,” Secretly Greatly stars three of Korea’s hottest young TV stars (Kim Soo-Hyun, Lee Hyun-Woo, Park Ki-Woong) as a trio of elite North Korean sleeper agents who have lived undercover in South Korea for so long that they now believe their own cover stories as an average joe, a wannabe singer and a high school student. Finally they get their first mission: kill each other. If they don’t get the job done, Pyongyang will send a hit team to take care of things. Secretly Greatly broke the Korean box-office record for most ticket sales by a Korean film in its first day of release earlier this month.

Join us with the Film Society at Lincoln Center’s New Wave members (under 40 film supporters) for this entertaining action-comedy and, following the film, an audience Q&A with the film’s director, Jang Cheol-Soo. The YPN’s discounted ticket price of $10 also includes popcorn and soda!

K-Night @ TKS: It’s All About King Sejong

Everyone’s invited to attend our open house where Korea comes to life as we explore a  different theme each K-Night! On Tuesday, April 30 join a night of fun and culture that’s all about King Sejong and experience what The Korea Society has to offer.

King Sejong is considered to have been one of the most outstanding and influential Korean kings of the Chosǒn Kingdom (1392-1910). Born in 1397, Sejong succeeded to the throne at the age of 22 and his reign, which lasted more than 30 years, was a period of great advancement in Korea in science, technology, and the arts. But the invention that King Sejong is most remembered for today, is that of hangul, the Korean alphabet.

Celebrate King Sejong’s legacy — learn hangul, practice Korean brush painting, listen to an interesting talk on King Sejong’s life, view an exhibit of Bojagi, and preview our new online resource on the Choson Kingdom. Plus watch an  award-winning historical K-drama! We’ll have drinks and Kosofresh will be on-site selling its signature Koso-bap if you’d like a bite to eat.

Space is limited for some of the programs, so EVERYONE please register HERE and select the program in each time slot you will be attending. If you are a non-member, please also purchase a ticket.
