Family Day: Korean New Year 2017

Celebrate Sŏllal, the Korean New Year, with a day of fun-filled family activities at The Korea Society! Enjoy storytelling based on Korean folk tales and practice sebae, the New Year’s bow, to show respect for elders. Play a Korean hand-drum, learn brush painting, compete in traditional games, and more!

Members: $25 per family of 3-5 ($5 each additional family member), $10 for individuals

Non-members: $30 per family of 3-5 ($5 each additional family member), $15 for individuals

 

Family Day is part of CelebrASIA NYC, a collaboration among leading cultural institutions in New York City designed to introduce children to Asian festivals and themes. Children are invited to ring in many Asian New Years from January to March by participating in hands-on workshops and programs at Japan Society, Museum of Chinese in America, The Korea Society, Asia Society, China Institute, Flushing Town Hall, and the Rubin Museum of Art. Spotlight Asia: Ring in the Year of the Monkey

Celebrate the Year of the Monkey with The Korea Society and the American Museum of Natural History! Master storyteller, artist, and filmmaker Maria Yoon explores Korean myths, legends and folk tales. Artist Kate Oh Trabulsi, winner of the 2014 Korean Fine Art Association’s Chairman Award, leads a minhwa painting workshop. All ages are welcome!

 Entrance is included with museum admission.

About the Speakers

 

 

2016 02 21 spotlight-asia kateKate Oh Trabulsi: As the former owner of an image reproductions company, Kate Oh Trabulsi often visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art to look at art that she was commissioned to reproduce. Taken in by the beauty of the museum, Kate decided to continue her fine arts and art history studies. She subsequently started working as a docent at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since 2004, she has been introducing the historical artwork exhibited at the museum to many Korean visitors. In 2013, she became the Korean Tour Guides’ captain. During those 11 years at the Met she gained more appreciation of oriental art especially Minhwa painting. Her current art is mostly traditional and contemporary Minhwa art.

Kate has a background as a painter and a sculptor (Parsons, The New School for Design, B.F.A. ’98 M.F.A. ’00). Having resided in New York City, away from her home country for over 20 years, she pursued Minhwa art to reconnect with her Korean roots. She was fascinated by the sublimity of its lines and colors, and became a Minhwa artist herself to share her interpretation of the artistic genre. Also being a skilled traditional Korean dancer, Kate performed at the 19th Annual Korean Performing Arts Center (KPAC) Concert, Taepy’ŏng Sôngdae, Great Peace, Tranquility, and Joy for Thousands of Years!, organized by Korean Traditional Performing Arts Association.

She is a board member of the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation USA (KACAF) and a Member of the Korean-New York Artist Association.

On January 22, 2011, dozens of families joined The Korea Society to celebrate sŏllal, Korean New Year. Participants enjoyed a day of fun-filled family activities such as storytelling, the New Year’s bow (sebae), traditional games such as yutnori, kite-making, and other crafts. As a bonus, tasty Korean treats such as param ttŏk, mujigae ttŏk, and sik‘ye were sampled by all. Unforgettable memories were made at The Korea Society! We hope to see everyone next year!

This event was a part of CelebrASIA New Year Festivities for Families.  Members of collaborating institutions (Japan Society, Asia Society, China Institute, and the Rubin Museum of Art) can purchase member-discounted tickets for this event by providing a promotional code. Children’s Day @ CMA

On April 27, 2013, over 400 parents and children joined The Korea Society at The Children’s Museum of the Arts for a day of Korean art activities. Teaching artist Karen Kriegel led three dance workshops, including fan, drum, and a mask dances. Renowned calligrapher Sungsook Setton conducted a brush painting and calligraphy workshop. CMA teaching artists also provided wonderful workshops on Korean embroidery, totem pole sculptures, and paper hanbok dolls. It was a wonderful day of joyous art activities for the whole family!

Participants enjoyed a day of fun-filled family activities such as a puppet show for the folk tale The Woodcutter and the Tiger Brother, the New Year’s bow (sebae), traditional games such as tuhonori (similar to horseshoes) and yutnori, a dance and sing-a-long, and kite-making, mask-making, and other crafts. As a bonus, tasty Korean treats such as param ttŏk and mujigae ttŏk,were sampled by all. Unforgettable memories were made at The Korea Society! We hope to see everyone next year!
