P’ansori Recital with Jin Wook Hong
Proclaimed by UNESCO in 2003 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, p’ansori is a unique genre of Korean musical storytelling. Singer, Jin Wook Hong, performs traditional and contemporary pieces in this style, accompanied by musicians on the gayageum, bass, drums, and keyboard.

About the Artist
Jin Wook Hong is a p’ansori singer and an occasional gosu, p’ansori drummer. He began his musical training at the age of twelve, studying with masters, Woo Hyang Sung and Su Mi Kim and later trained as a p’ansori isuja, a successor, for Intangible Cultural Property No. 5. After completing his undergraduate studies at Seoul Institute of the Arts College, Hong relocated to the US to study Music Therapy at Molloy College.

The 15th Annual New York Korean Film Festival Announces Upcoming Program
for November 3rd to November 5th, 2017 at the Museum of the Moving Image.
The New York Korean Film Festival returns to the Museum for its yearly celebration of the best in Korean cinema. This 15th edition of the Festival includes a wide range of genres, with action thrillers, comedies, romance, documentary, social drama, melodrama, and the madcap science fiction and social critique of Bong Joon-ho.
All films are in Korean with English subtitles.

A paranoid thriller with a high-tech edge, Park Kwang-hyun’s (Welcome to Dongmakgol) latest film pits a team of skilled video gamers against a mysterious underworld organization in a battle that rages through both the physical and digital worlds. When Kwon Yu (Ji Chang-wook), a former tae kwon do star turned video game addict, is framed for murder, his gamer friends come to his aid and in the process uncover a vast, murderous conspiracy. This nonstop thrill ride of a movie mixes jaw-dropping action scenes with pointed commentary about socioeconomic inequality in today’s Korea. Justin Lowe of The Hollywood Reporter calls it “an updated version of Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy set in the world of online video games…. A Quiet Dream (춘몽)

With Han Ye-ri, Yang Ik-june, Park Jung-bum, Yoon Jong-bin. In Korean with English subtitles. The loveable opening film of the 2016 Busan Film Festival follows three goofballs vying for the affection of the attractive owner (Han Ye-ri) of a dive bar in a scrappy Seoul neighborhood. The three wooers are well-known actor-directors riffing on their own films. Yang Ik-june plays a vagabond gangster (as in Breathless), Park Jung-bum is a defector from North Korea (as in The Journals of Musan), and Yoon Jong-bin’s character is reminiscent of the army private he played in Unforgiven. From this clever conceit, director Zhang Lu spins what Variety’s Maggie Lee called a “whimsical, frequently poetic urban rhapsody buoyed by its deadpan dropout protagonists.”

The prolific Hong Sang-soo boldly and wittily continues his ongoing exploration of the painful caprices of modern romance that was inspired by Luis Buñuel’s That Obscure Object of Desire. Painter Young-soo (Kim Joo-hyuk) hears secondhand that his girlfriend, Min-jung (Lee Yoo-young), has recently had (many) drinks with an unknown man. This leads to a quarrel that seems to end their relationship. The next day, Young-soo sets out in search of Min-jung, while she—or a woman who looks exactly like her and may or may not be her twin—has a series of encounters with strange men, some of whom claim to have met her before. Yourself and Yours is a break-up/make-up comedy unlike any other, suffused with sophisticated modernist mystery.

An audience favorite at the recent Rotterdam and New York Asian Film Festivals, Jung Yoon-suk’s appropriately irreverent documentary follows the anarchic exploits of the Bamseom Pirates, a politically outspoken, gleefully nonconformist two-man punk band. Performing mainly at street protests and political rallies, their satirical antics, which include blasting through one hundred songs in ten minutes in their first gig and titling one of their songs “All Hail Kim Jong-il,” take aim at the absurdities, inequality, and corruption of South Korean society. But they learn just how far they can go when their manager is arrested for posting allegedly pro-North Korean tweets.

An “assuredly executed drama with fiery performances” (Maggie Lee, Variety), Shin Dong-il’s engaging film illustrates the toll Korea’s hyper-competitive society can take on an ordinary family. When middle manager Beom-gu (Im Hyeon-gook) is fired from his job after eighteen years, his violent rage throws his family into turmoil. His wife Mi-young (Lee Hye-eun), now the sole breadwinner, starts cutting ethical corners in her job selling credit cards. Meanwhile, their daughter Ha-na (Chae Bin) frets over her college entrance exam. Shin’s psychologically astute film is a well-crafted combination of social critique and tense drama that movingly makes the case for following one’s passions rather than succumbing to societal pressures.

Hailed visionary Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, The Host) returns with a typically twisted, vegetarian-friendly blockbuster about the friendship between a young girl named Mija (Seo-Hyun Ahn, Monster) and her “super-pig” Okja. In the guise of a family movie, this madcap anti-corporate satire follows the duo’s fight against a villainous corporation—led by the always superb Tilda Swinton, who plays both a hypocrite CEO and her scheming twin sister. En route to freedom, Mija and Okja encounter a plethora of quirky characters, including a cadre of eco-terrorists led by a courteous troublemaker (Paul Dano) and a “Sir Attenborough” from hell (Jake Gyllenhaal).

G.E.M.iN.Y 10th Anniversary Concert: The Nexus of Gayakeum and Generations
G.E.M.iN.Y, short for Gayakeum Ensemble Music in New York, derives from the Korean phrase, “chaeminaji” meaning to have fun while performing. The ensemble, composed of founder, Rami Seo and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation gayakeumists, debuted in the form of a gayakeum orchestra in 2007 with “If This Gayakeum Could Talk.” In addition to performing traditional Korean music on the 12-string gayakeum, G.E.M.iN.Y plays music of all genres, including classical, jazz, crossover, and contemporary, on 18-string and 25-string gayakeums. To celebrate GEMiNY’s 10th year anniversary in 2017, the concert will showcase world music that brings together traditional Korean culture and the diversity of cultures in New York.

Young Masters in Concert: Winners of the Onnara Gugak Competition
The winners of the prestigious Onnara Gugak Competition visit The Korea Society for a special concert of traditional Korean music. The young masters will perform gayageum sanjo, p’iri sangnyeongsanpuri, jeongga suyangsanga, and the famous Arirang medley. The concert also features chunaengjeonon, a court dance inspired by singing nightingales on a fine spring day.

ABOUT THE NATIONAL GUGAK CENTER
Gugak, or traditional Korean music, has been passed down through the ages and represents the breath of Korean history and culture. The National Gugak Center is the principal institution engaged in producing and disseminating traditional Korean music and dance. The Center’s Court Music Orchestra, Folk Music Group, Traditional Dance Theater, and Contemporary Gugak Orchestra actively perform to preserve and develop gugak. Also, the Gugak Research Office was established for academic research on Korea n music.
In addition to performance and research, the Center is engaged in education, and provides lectures for teachers, families, and foreign residents in Korea.
The Center’s museum exhibits 5,000 items representing the history of Korean music. The Namwon National Gugak Center for Changgeuk, the Jindo National Gugak Center (known for its training programs), and the Busan National Gugak Center are affiliated branches.

About the Artists
Lucite Tokki is a Seoul-based female pop duo formed in 2005. The group consists of Sun Young Kim and Ye Jin Cho. They first met in college during a music-writing course. Over a decade later, they have released four full albums and six EPs, and have a worldwide following.

1. Invocation (축원)
Binari, Introductory Prayer Chant or Shaman Ritual
Among the four major pieces of samulnori, the binari is most akin to a religious ritual, featuring pleas to the spirits for blessings. The piece welcomes the spirits to spread good luck to the audience.
2. Taepyeongmu (태평무)
Taepyeongmu, literally “great peace dance,” functions as a wish for harmony. This artistic dance employs techniques and musical patterns from Gyeonggi-do danggut, a shamanic ritual that honors the village god of Gyeonggi province.
3. Chunghyang Sarangga (가야금병창 춘향가 중 사랑가)
Gayageum byeongchang is a genre in which the gayageum player also performs vocals. The song is the main pillar and the instrument supports as an accompaniment. Chunghyangga is the most famous p’ansori and is considered one of the best musically and as a work of literature. Sarangga is a song depicting the love story of Chunhyang, one of the most well-known Korean folk tales.
4. 설장구&사물놀이 위한 “NORI”
Perhaps the most famous of all samulnori pieces, samul nongak garak, is an arrangement of the representative rhythms from all around Korea, performed in a seated position. Three separate pieces, Yangnam Nongak, Uddari Pungmul, and Honam Udo-gut, performed in the early years of samulnori were later combined into this single piece. This piece highlights the contrasting timbre of the gongs and drums, arranged in a way that embodies the principles of winding, bending, and blending.

About the Artists
Anji Park earned his Ph.D. in Music from ChungAng University. He is a master of Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 92, Taepyeongmu. He is the Director of the Park Anji YeonHee Company and an adjunct Professor at ChungAng University, Korea National University of Arts, Sejong University, and Ewha Woman’s University. Master Park is also an instructor at National Gukak High School and National Traditional Arts High School. He is the Chairman of the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Association Samulnori Division, was the recipient of the President’s Prize at the International Samulnori competition in 1994, and currently a member of SamulGwangDae.

Founded in 1988 by Duksoo Kim, Kwangsoo Lee, Yongbae Kim, and Jongsil Choi, SamulGwangDae is dedicated to performing and preserving traditional Korean music and dance. They earned the grand prize at the 1st World Samulnori Competition.

About the Artist
Haerina Park is currently a professor in the department of Korean Music at Chung-Ang University in Korea. A Korean native, Ms. Park holds a B.A. and Ph.D. from Chung-Ang University and earned her master’s degree from New York University in 2007. Ms. Park has extensive experience on the gayageum and other traditional instruments with several orchestras, including the Traditional Korean Orchestra at the National Theater in Korea, Korea W Philharmonic Orchestra at the Seoul Art Center, and the New Jersey Philharmonic Gala Concert at Carnegie Hall. She is also a representative of Gayastra, a gayageum ensemble orchestra that has released several albums. She trains younger students and published a book called Research on Yoohee-Chang-ga (Korean children’s songs) Before Liberation of Korea (2008), Ms. Park is making strong efforts to develop Korean music education.

About the Film DirectorsAbout the Film Score Composers
Sofia Cho is a native of South Korea and has worked for Korean and international productions for the past six years as a freelance producer and a videographer. She holds a BFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. As an artist, she creates the works that are allegorical of our lives. The story belongs to you, or me, or the girl next-door. It happened to nobody yet everybody at the same time.
Haeyoung Paul Chung is a senior in undergraduate Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. He lived in South Korea for 12 years and currently resides in New York as an independent filmmaker. His short film Mercy is written, directed, and edited by Chung, and it deals with a young couple going through the morning of 9/11. He sees himself as a writer-director with an emphasis on good story and believes that all good stories should be made into film. Paul is currently producing for Vivid, a short film he has written and will be directing.
Hye Mee Na, a Writer/Director/Editor, she immigrated with her family to the United States from South Korea when she was fifteen.
She is deeply interested in exploring the factors that influence the formation of one’s identity and the perception of the “other” in her films, and her ultimate goal as a filmmaker is to make the audience laugh and cry at the same time. In 2015, she graduated from New York University’s prestigious MFA Film program and now works in New York City where she recently finished editing Chi-Raq, Spike Lee’s latest feature film, while writing her own feature length screenplay.
Sewi Ryu was born on March 17th 1995, in Seoul, South Korea. She attends the University of Southern California, School of Cinematic Arts to cultivate her interest in filmmaking. Her interest spans across many fields such as film directing, editing, screenwriting, photography, and graphic design. Her most recent short film, Averted Vision, which she directed, produced, and edited, tells a story about a lonely, delusional man who confronts the unbearable truth as he recounts his past marriage. The film is noted for its stylistic visual aesthetics.
Yereum Kang is originally from South Korea and a New York based composer for film and multimedia. She is also a singer-songwriter and her main instrument is a piano. She attended City College of New York for Music BA and graduated from film scoring master’s program at NYU on May, 2015. She has studied with Mark Suozzo, Michael Patterson, and a Grammy Award nominated jazz trombonist, Alan Ferber for jazz arranging and composition.
Narim Kim, a recipient of Alan Menken Award has proven to be a composer of highest caliber in concert classical music, film scoring and songwriting. His concert pieces were read by prominent ensembles such as Penderecki String Quartet and Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. His credits as a film composer include My Life In Your Memories (Jung, 2014) screened by KAFFNY and co-composing for Meet Miss Anxiety (Kwak, 2014) which was widely released in Asia. He also worked as a music supervisor for recently-discovered Past and Present in the Cradle of Dixie (Montgomery, 1914) which was screened at Museum of Moving Image. He is currently working on his first songwriting album.
Sean Shinwon Kim is an internationally recognized composer, producer and performer born in Seoul, South Korea. Long before moving to New York City, Kim was passionate about blending Western classical practices with Korean traditional music. Kim earned his film scoring master’s degree (M.M.) from New York University under the direction of Dr. Ronald Sadoff. He was recently one of eight participants to be selected for the prestigious SCL mentorship program. Additionally, he has participated in the ASCAP/NYU Buddy Baker’s workshop and has been honored with awards in several composition competitions. Recently, Kim has contributed to a diverse array of concerts such as the UN 70th anniversary concert with KBS Korean Traditional Orchestra, Lang Lang and Harlem Gospel Choir as well as a Hanryu concert in Washington D.C. Currently, Kim is working on several films and album projects and is the radio DJ of a program titled ‘Lalala’ on FM 87.7 KRB NY Radio Korea.
Jane Eunsun Lee is a composer for film, multimedia, and musical theatre and is also an arranger and a keyboardist. She earned her Master’s degree in Scoring for Film and Multimedia at New York University and her Bachelor’s in Music Composition at University of California, Los Angeles. In 2015, she was selected as a composer at BMI Lehman Engle Musical Theatre Workshop and has been participating since. Her musical theatre credits include “In Life and Death” and “Enchanted by a Spell” as a composer and music director. Also, she was a keyboardist for “Wearing Black” the musical at the 2015 New York Musical Theatre Festival. As a film composer, she did an internship at Sound Mind Music in Hollywood in 2012, where she was an assistant for composer David Ari Leon (“Spider-Man”, “Avengers” TV series at Marvel) and has scored for various short films since. Her compositions and arrangements have been performed by different groups from Sejong University Faculty Orchestra to Broadway singers at renowned venues such as Joe’s Pub and Laurie Beechman Theatre.
