On January 24, 2026, The Korea Society President and CEO Abraham Kim (second from right) attended a luncheon with Prime Minister Kim Min-seok of the Republic of Korea in downtown Manhattan, alongside a select group of Korean American leaders. Attendees included New York State Assemblyman Ron Kim, New York State Assemblywoman Grace Lee, Mayor Chong Paul Kim of Palisades Park, New Jersey, and Mayor Mark Park of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. The private gathering took place during Prime Minister Kim’s historic U.S. visit—the first standalone visit by a South Korean premier in more than four decades—highlighting a renewed commitment to alliance stewardship and people-to-people diplomacy.

Prime Minister Kim emphasized that the current moment presents a pivotal opportunity to deepen U.S.–Korea cooperation across policy, economic, security, and cultural domains. He underscored the strategic importance of Korean American leadership in bridging the two societies and reaffirmed his commitment to sustained, high-level engagement to address bilateral issues in real time.

Dr. Abraham Kim participated as the only non-elected Korean American leader at the table, contributing actively both as a national Korean American civic leader and as the newly appointed President and CEO of The Korea Society. He highlighted the Society’s mission, cross-sector outreach, and longstanding role as a national platform connecting policymakers, business leaders, scholars, and civic actors engaged on Korea issues.

The luncheon reflected a shared belief that a stronger, more resilient U.S.–Korea alliance depends not only on government-to-government ties, but also on empowered community leadership and trusted networks sharing a common vision for a healthy bilateral alliance.

On January 13, the Council of Korean Americans and the Korea Economic Institute of America presented the Korean American Day Award to now-President & CEO of The Korea Society, Abraham Kim, recognizing his visionary leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, and decades of dedicated service to the Korean American community.

Scott Snyder, President & CEO of the Korea Economic Institute of America, delivered remarks:

He approaches his work with intentionality, and it’s an intentionality that is built around connection. I think that that is both a set of characteristics that has embodied what he has done at CKA and it’s also a set of attributes that will serve him well as he moves to The Korea Society as their new president.

The Hungnam Rescue

Join us for an inspiring and heartwarming story timed for the holiday season about the largest wartime humanitarian evacuation in history. During The Korean War, naval and merchant ships from America and its allies rescued almost 100,000 North Korean refugees. Among these ships was a humble freighter, the SS Meredith Victory. Although it was built to accommodate only a few passengers and crew, a staggering 14,000 refugees were crammed on board, filling five cargo holds and the entire main deck. The ship carried them all to safety despite lacking food, mine detection equipment, doctors, interpreters, sanitation facilities, and heat or lights in the cargo holds. The 75th Anniversary of this incredible event in 2025 will be marked by a major long-term exhibition at the American Merchant Marine Museum (AMMM), U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, alongside exhibitions in Korea. Speakers include Burley Smith, who was just 21 when he took part in the rescue as Junior Third Mate fresh out of Kings Point. Today, aged 95, he is the last surviving crew member. Joining Burley is Dr. Joshua Smith, Director of the American Merchant Marine Museum, in conversation with Korea Society policy director Jonathan Corrado.

Expert Take: U.S.-North Korea Relations with former Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun

Join us for a conversation with Stephen Biegun, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and Special Representative for North Korea. This discussion will examine past diplomatic efforts to achieve the denuclearization of North Korea, lessons learned, and future prospects. What are Mr. Biegun’s takeaways from his summitry engagement with North Korea? Is it still possible today to pursue mutually acceptable waypoints within the confines of a grand bargain or should more modest goals be pursued? How do geopolitical shifts and hardening regional rivalries undermine the U.S. and North Korean interest in improving bilateral relations? How does the public discourse create reductive dichotomies between deterrence vs. diplomacy and human rights vs. humanitarian efforts? The moderator for this program is Korea Society policy director Jonathan Corrado.

In-person attendance is restricted to Kim Koo Fellows and Korea Society members ONLY. Please click below to see membership options. Korea Society members will receive a separate in-person invitation.

Artist Talk: Hayoon Jay Lee with Seph Rodney

In the modern tradition of abstract art, artists look beyond what we physically see. Using color, shape, line, and texture, they express strong emotional content without constraints of representation.

Hayoon Jay Lee uses rice as object, motif, metaphor and visceral biomorphic forms, meticulously and meditatively arranging individual grains of rice into a surface with modeling paste to create physical and emotional topographies. In this Artist Talk, Lee will be in a conversation with art critic Seph Rodney about her art and career.

Empowering Women with Holistic Care: A Conversation with Rael’s Co-Founder and CEO, Yanghee Paik

The Korea Society is pleased to invite you to a fireside chat with Co-founder and CEO of Rael, Yanghee Paik. In 2017, Yanghee joined forces with two other Korean-American women to revolutionize the stagnant American feminine-care product market by introducing clean, high-performing holistic feminine care products. Under Yanghee’s leadership, Rael quickly became the best-selling pad on Amazon and expanded into major retailers such as Target and Walmart, offering a wide range of holistic care products for women, from feminine products to acne-treatment beauty patches.

Join us to hear the trailblazing journey of Yanghee, who transitioned from a successful career as a Disney executive to leading a consumer-goods startup. A Conversation with Rael’s Co-Founder and CEO, Yanghee Paik

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Yanghee Paik is the co-founder and CEO of Rael, a clean feminine care and skincare startup based in Los Angeles that has been disrupting the industry with its holistic cycle care approach. As a global brand, Rael has been grabbing the attention of those who seek alternative high-quality, better for you solutions.

Prior to starting Rael, Yanghee was an executive at the Walt Disney Studios where she focused on distribution strategy and sales. It was during this role that Yanghee met her co-founders, who suffered from irritation and allergic reactions caused by conventional pads and tampons. Concerned by the lack of ingredient transparency and consumer education around period care, Rael’s co-founders discussed how they could improve women’s lives by thoughtfully curating natural period care solutions that are safe and highly effective. As first-generation immigrants from Korea, they knew how advanced Korean feminine care products were and recognized the gap in the US market for similar technology and quality. They decided to marry high-quality organic cotton from the US with the cutting-edge manufacturing technology from Korea to launch Rael’s first organic cotton pads in 2017, which became the #1 best-selling pad on Amazon.

Now, Rael provides more than just feminine care as Yanghee pushed her vision for Rael to be a holistic personal care brand, centered on solutions for all aspects of your cycle. She led its expansion into natural feminine hygiene and clean, vegan skincare and opened an office in Korea, where its product development team was built. Yanghee also helped Rael evolve from a digitally native brand into an omnichannel powerhouse by spearheading its launch at Target and Walmart. In 2022, Yanghee led Rael’s $35M Series B funding and is now focused on taking the company to the next level. Rael will continue its product innovation, expand its 360-approach to holistic cycle care, accelerate retail growth and partnerships, and advance its global expansion.

Yanghee previously held a role as a management consultant at Boston Consulting Group, earned her MBA from Harvard Business School, and received a B.A. degree from Seoul National University. While leading the company at the headquarters in Los Angeles, Yanghee travels to Seoul regularly to see family, and work with the product development team in Korea to find new trends and spearhead innovation.
