Author Talks: Jungeun Yun & Shanna Tan

Welcome to Marigold Mind Laundry, where we wash away the stains from your heart.

In this enchanting tale—a blockbuster bestseller in Korea—the enigmatic owner of a magical laundromat that erases people’s painful memories must learn to find her own peace before she can truly help others.

Born with mysterious powers she does not know how to control, young Jieun accidentally causes her family to vanish. She vows to live a million lives in search of them. One night, she brings the Marigold Mind Laundry into existence. Its service: to remove the deepest pain from our hearts. Jieun listens while customers share their unhappy memories. As they speak, she transfers their sadness onto T-shirts as stains. After a spin in the washing machine, the stains become flower petals that soar into the air, and Jieun’s customers find solace. And as Jieun listens to her customers’ stories, she learns that the will to heal is not a rare gift, but a power we all possess—if only we are open to it.

Joyous and inspiring, Marigold Mind Laundry, offers wonderment and comfort as it teaches us to tap into the magic that lives within us all.

In this episode of Author Talks, the author Jungeun Yun and translator Shanna Tan discuss the English publication of Marigold Mind Laundry.

Using color, shape, line, and texture, they express strong emotional content without constraints of representation. With her bold colors and brushstroke, Annette Hur deliberately positions her paintings in between abstraction and figuration, dealing with the conflicts of the real lived experience and how her body remembers and processes it.

“Anchoring to nothing, my ever-flowing identity as an immigrant female in the United States created the journey to investigate my self-perception, longing and belonging. The urge to release myself from the past traumas conflicts with the yearning for home and the loved ones who are no longer with me. This collision between reality, dreams, and desires resonates through layers of violent hues of colors and boundless yet determined brushstrokes. Water-in nature- as a universally symbolic capricious element, operates as a metaphor for perpetual journeys and reflecting the passing of time.”

The Other Korea: Stories from the Diaspora

Join authors Ery Shin (Spring On the Peninsula) and Christine Ma-Kellams (The Band) as they discuss their books and stories from the Korean diaspora.

Longlisted for the 2024 Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, Spring On the Peninsula is Ery Shin’s debut novel about a desultory libertine who mourns a failed relationship over the course of two harsh winters. In this unprecedented portrait of millennials living in Seoul, Shin captures contemporary Seoul in all of its glory and turmoil, and this daringly irreverent novel is a poignant meditation on modern life in a city beset by North Korea’s shadow.

A psychologist with a savior complex offers shelter to a recently canceled K-pop idol in this “first great K-pop literary phenomenon” (Debutiful), The Band is a first novel from the cultural psychologist Christine Ma-Kellams. In its “gripping exploration of the complexities that accompany fame” (Booklist), The Band considers the many ways in which love and celebrity can devolve into something far more sinister.

Part of Town Hall’s “K-Town Hall Series,” each ticket includes a copy of Spring On the Peninsula and The Band.

Gene Yoon, also known in Korean as Yoon Soo Yoon, is the Chairman of the Board of Italian sportswear company FILA Holdings Corp. and American golf product company Acushnet Holdings Corp., which owns the Titleist and FootJoy trademarks. He is widely credited with not only introducing FILA to the Korean market in 1991, but also restoring its global popularity, having acquired the global brand trademark in 2007 and reintroduced ‘90s classics like the Disruptor sneaker as vintage-inspired FILA designs have been a hit with younger generations.

Until her retirement, she achieved a total of 25 victories on the LPGA Tour, including 5 major wins, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2020, Seri Pak received the Bob Jones Award from the USGA, which is considered the Nobel Prize in golf, for her contributions to the sport. This award placed her alongside golf legends like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, as well as former US President George H. W. Bush, who made significant contributions to golf.

In 2024, Seri Pak became the first Korean player to host an LPGA Tour event named after her, the “FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship,” providing a new tournament for many golfers around the world to experience.

Additionally, Seri Pak was selected by the American economic magazine “Business Insider” as one of the 36 symbolic figures who contributed to the development of women’s sports globally, being the only Asian player on the list. After retirement, she has been active as a businesswoman, promoting the popularization of golf and the development of the sports industry through golf and sports marketing. Through the Seri Pak Hope Foundation, she annually hosts junior golf tournaments in the US and Korea, nurturing junior golfers. Forget Me Not: Impact of North Korean Human Rights Abuses on Families Worldwide

Join us for a unique and special event highlighting the profound impact of North Korea’s human rights abuses, with a focus on divided families. The program opens with introductory remarks from Republic of Korea Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul and keynote remarks from United States Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell. A panel discussion moderated by the U.S. Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights Julie Turner will highlight the effects of North Korea’s human rights violations on families throughout the world. Perspectives include: a Korean-American separated from their family during the Korean War; the family member of a Japanese person abducted by North Korea; the family member of an unrepatriated South Korean prisoner of war; and a North Korean escapee whose sister was forcibly repatriated to North Korea by China in 2023. The panel session will close with remarks from Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel.

Following the panel, a reception celebrates the opening of an interactive exhibit providing a glimpse into everyday life in North Korea. The exhibit contains a series of mini-sets that depict domestic life in North Korea, contrasted with a set of a modern, South Korean home. The exhibit will highlight the disconnect between North and South Korea and expand on themes explored during the panel.

This event is co-hosted by the Governments of the United States, Republic of Korea, and Luxembourg. This event is co-organized by a global coalition of 25 civil society partners. Coalition members include the Centro para la Apertura y el Desarrollo de America Latina, Center for Justice and Accountability, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, Global Rights Compliance, HanVoice, Human Rights Watch, International Coalition to Stop Crimes Against Humanity in North Korea, International Federation for Human Rights, Korean War POW Family Association, Liberty in North Korea, Mulmangcho, Network for North Korean Democracy and Human Rights, Now Action and Unity for Human Rights, People for Successful Corean Reunification, Stepping Stones, Sunny Pictures, THINK, Tongilmom, Transitional Justice Working Group, Unification Academy, Unification Media Group, and UNISEED.

In-Person attendance is invitation only.

All are invited to view via live stream.

Dyadic | Annette Hur & Hayoon Jay Lee

Exhibition: September 12 – December 13, 2024 |

In the modern tradition of abstract art, artists look beyond what we physically see. Using color, shape, line, and texture, they express strong emotional content without constraints of representation.

Two Korean-born artists based in New York present their own expositions and elucidations in Dyadic, a duo exhibition. With her bold colors and brushstroke, Annette Hur deliberately positions her paintings in between abstraction and figuration, dealing with the conflicts of the real lived experience and how her body remembers and processes it. Hayoon Jay Lee uses rice as object, motif, metaphor and visceral biomorphic forms, meticulously and meditatively arranging individual grains of rice into a surface with modeling paste to create physical and emotional topographies.

The Korea Society Gallery is open only by appointment. The appointment must be made at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled visit. To make an appointment, please contact info@koreasociety.org.
