YSP Gallery

YSP Gallery in Chelsea neighborhood of New York showcases the incredible legacy of Young Sook Park, who has dedicated her life to recapturing lost ceramic methods and techniques of the Joseon Dynasty.

Pamela Tinnen, the director of YSP Gallery, will cover the storied histories of Korean ceramics; the need for time-honored classical techniques in contemporary art practices; and how Ms. Park, though years of dedicated study and practice, was able to revive the long-lost Korean art form of white-porcelain moon jars.

Rest In Peace, Rear Admiral J. Robert Lunney

The Korea Society fondly remembers our friend, Rear Admiral J. Robert Lunney, who passed away last week at the age of 94.

For his full obituary, please go here. An excerpt reads:

“J. Robert Lunney died peacefully surrounded by his wife and son on Thursday March 10th.  He was born on 15 December 1927 in New York City. Bob was admired by all that knew him for his commitment to family, his humor, passion for history, and dedication to the many organizations he was a member of. Enlisting in the Navy at 17, during World War ll, he served with the Naval Amphibious Forces, Pacific (Marshall Islands and Mariana Islands) 1945-46. During the Korean War he served in Korea, 1950-1951, with the Military Sea Transportation Service as a staff officer (Inchon Landing; Hungnam Evacuation). His Gallant Ship Citation commends Admiral Lunney for his courage and resourcefulness in participating in ‘one of the greatest marine rescues in the history of the world’ at Hungnam, North Korea during December 1950. The Guinness Book of World Records cites this wartime action as, ‘The greatest rescue operation ever by a single ship by evacuating 14,000 refugees’ threatened with annihilation. He will be missed greatly by his wife of 46 years, Joan, and their son Alex.”

  About Coreyah

“uninhibited vision of Korean traditional music” — NPR Music
“Mesmerising and wonderful ★★★★★” — Broadway Baby
“Beyond the musicians’ sizzling chops, what’s most interesting about this band is how subtly they weave classic Korean folk themes into a rock framework.”
— New York Music Daily

Coreyah is a psychedelic Korean folk music group whose six members integrate traditional Korean instruments, vocals, guitar, and percussion. Since their 2010 debut, Coreyah has pioneered a new style of Korean music that blends genres of contemporary ethnic and popular sounds while still maintaining the distinctive characteristics of traditional Korean instruments. The group’s unique freewheeling, polystylistic vision combines a variety of influences, including Anglo-American rock, Balkan gypsy, and genres from South America and Africa. Coreyah has toured around the world visiting over 50 cities in 34 countries, and continues to delight audiences at home and abroad. Coreyah was recently featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert in June 2020 and performed three songs from their new album.

Coreyah has release their 4th album “Clap & Applause” in July 2020. This new album celebrates their 10th anniversary with a dance-inducing, exciting new vision for Korean world music. The name Coreyah is a Sino-Korean homonym that refers to the inheritance of the past and also in Korean means “whale”—the group’s totem animal and good luck charm.

Band Members: Kim Dongkun (daegeum, sogeum, tungso), Ham Boyoung (vocal), Kim Chorong (percussion, Chulhyungeum), Kyungyi (percussion), Na Sunjin (geomungo), and Ko Jaehyeon (guitar).

About the Moderator:

Dr. John Yoo

Dr. John Yoo was born in South Korea and immigrated to the US at age 4 with his parents and older brother. 5 years later, at age 9, John and his family were scheduled to move back to Korea to follow their father’s job location, but a young Dr. Yoo and his brother insisted they would study in the US instead. Their parents took a leap of faith and embarked on what would become a 10 year “gireogi” status with their father working overseas, and their mother looking after the kids in the US. Vowing to make their parents’ immense sacrifice worthwhile, both brothers promised each other to work their hardest to make their dreams come true.

Dr. Yoo’s brother (Dr. Eric Yoo) went on to match to his dream medical specialty in Gastroenterology, but Dr. Yoo debated whether to go into medicine, dentistry, or… K-Pop. After much deliberation, he decided to pursue his studies and combine both his love for the arts with healthcare, and found dentistry to be the healthy intersection of all his interests. At Columbia Dental, he received the Outstanding Student Leader Award from the American College of Dentists for exceptional leadership, scholarship, and service commitment to his community. From college to his pediatric dental residency training at Jacobi Medical Center, Dr. Yoo tutored students from around the world through an online classroom, and discovered a passion and knack for working specifically with the pediatric population. His videos on pediatric patient management and strategies have garnered him recent internet fame, amassing over 150 million views across platforms.

Dr. Yoo has been featured on numerous social media channels and has lectured to students on topics ranging from pediatric behavior management, dental school and applications, dental residency, and social media. After graduating from residency, Dr. Yoo teamed up with Columbia colleagues to build Beam City Dental Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in Fort Lee, NJ, where he now works as a full-time pediatric dentist and co-owner.

Dr. Yoo has been involved in numerous Korean organizations including Korean American Scientists and Engineers Association, Korean American Students Association (Former Duke Chapter Founder/President), and Korean American Dental Students Association (Former Columbia President). During his downtime, Dr. Yoo enjoys making YouTube videos with his best friend on channel JBRO, working out, golfing, traveling, personal training, and singing. Dr. Yoo has participated in dental missions to Brazil, Peru, Panama, Jamaica, and Cambodia, and is eager to treat more children around the world along the way.
