President of the Korea Capital Market Institute, Dr. Hyoung-Tae Kim, addresses recent innovations in the Korean financial environment. Dr. Kim discusses the birth of hedge funds, the Korean derivative markets, and reforms affecting investment banks operating in the various Korean markets. The discussion will be moderated by Charles T. Kimball, Managing Director of the Korea Center for International Finance.
The Global Financial Crisis of 2008 tilted the financial landscape in the direction of a number of regulatory reforms initiated by the G20 and related working groups. Korea’s increasing linkage to global financial markets put her among the leadership of the organizations working together to strengthen prudential regulations and lower systemic risks.
Korea has renewed its commitment to sponsoring a competitive financial services industry by undertaking a revision of the Financial Investment Services and Capital Markets Act. The Act was introduced in 2007 with a view to promote financial innovation and fair competition in the Korea’s capital markets. The introduction of hedge funds into the Korean marketplace has been the subject of a great deal of focus by all participants. Dr. Kim’s presentation sheds light on the international financial regulatory environment and some key issues for Korea.
