Event Link: Jonathan Best received his Ph.D. from  Harvard University as a joint degree from the Department of Fine Arts and the Department of East Asian Languages & Civilizations. Subsequently, he has taught East Asian Art History at the University of Virginia and Wesleyan University. His research and  publications-all focused on early Korea-have addressed religious history, diplomatic and political history, and art history. His current research centers on the Samguk sagi, the  oldest surviving history of Korea. In 2006, Harvard University published his monograph A History of Early Paekche- together with an annotated translation of the Paekche Annals of the Samguk sagi.   Soyoung Lee is Associate Curator in the Department of Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum and the Met’s first curator dedicated to Korean art. She and her colleague Denise Patry Leidy organized the landmark exhibition Silla: Korea’s Golden Kingdom (November 4, 2013-February 23, 2014), the first presentation outside of Asia to focus on the art of this important early period in Korean history. The show includes National Treasures and works never before shown in the U.S. Most recently she also curated Poetry in Clay: Korean Buncheong Ceramics from Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art (2011) and Art of the Korean Renaissance, 1400-1600 (2009), each accompanied by a publication.  She received her B.A. and M.A. from Columbia University and is currently finishing her Ph.D.   Rachel Song is an artist and educator with twelve years of experience in the field of education. Her classroom approach is based on arts integration and inquiry. Currently a teacher for the Horace Mann School and a learning specialist for the CUNY Research Foundation, Ms. Song has also taught education courses for the City College of New York, as well as for other community colleges, schools, and institutions. Rachel learned about Korea's relationship with the Silk Road on a Summer Fellowship with the Korea Society in 2011, and also through collaborating with the Silk Road Project’s NYC Pilot Program from 2009-2011.

Educators are invited to join our 2013 Fall Teachers’ Conference East & West: The Silk Road Meets Ancient Korea. Dr. Jonathan Best, Professor of Art History at Wesleyan University, lectures on the Silla Kingdom’s role in East Asia. Soyoung Lee, Associate Curator of Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, highlights art pieces from the upcoming Met exhibit Silla: Korea’s Golden Kingdom. Rachel Song, Teacher at Horace Mann School, leads a hands-on classroom activities workshop to assist educators with fun ways to introduce Korea’s role in the Silk Road to their students.
