Event Link: Jae-uk Choo is a Visiting Scholar in the English Department of Oklahoma State University’s College of Arts & Science. Dr. Choo teaches Modern British Novels, Science Fiction, and British & American Children’s Literature at the undergraduate and graduate levels. During the winter break of 2012- 2013, he directed a “Global Storytelling Project,” held by The Institute of Storytelling of Chung-Ang University, in which 60 students collaborated to create 10 English stories based on Korean tradition and culture. The stories were translated into Korean and published in Korea in May 2013. Dr. Choo served as the Editorial Board Member of The Korean Association of Modern Fiction in English from 2011- 2013. He currently has an interest in Native American culture and literature and is also developing his first children’s story. Mark Peterson is head of the Korean Section, Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages at Brigham Young University. Prior to his appointment at BYU in 1984, he was the director of the Fulbright program in Korea from 1978 to 1983. He is a member of the Association for Asian Studies, where he is the chair of the Korean Studies Committee, as well as the Royal Asiatic Society, the International Association for Korean Language Education, the International Korean Literature Association, and the American Association of Korean Teachers. He received a B.A. in Asian Studies and Anthropology from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Civilization from Harvard University. Karen Kriegel began her Korean dance career in N.Y.C. while attending the Juilliard School after being introduced to Master Sohn InYoung of the NOW Dance Company. For 17 years Ms. Kriegel has studied with many teachers including two Korean national treasures. She focuses on Korean traditional dance, neo-traditional and works at her own dance company, the WDI-World Dance Initiative, which collaborates with folkloric dancers of other genres in performance and teaching settings. In addition, Ms. Kriegel is the Korean dance teacher at Democracy Prep Charter High School, the Korean Culture School in Harlem. She is also a teaching artist for the Flushing Town Hall Smithsonian Institution Affiliate Program.

Educators are invited to join our 2014 Spring Teachers’ Conference, Korean Children’s Stories. Dr. Jae-uk Choo, Visiting Scholar at Oklahoma State University, lectures on children’s literature influenced by Korean culture, citing stories from his publication Ten Told Tales: Unmasking Korean Culture. Dr. Mark Peterson, Professor of Korean Studies at Brigham Young University, highlights traditional Korean values in sijo poetry. Karen Kriegel, Dance Educator, leads a hands-on classroom activities workshop to assist educators with fun ways to introduce Korean folk-tales to their students..
