The Korea Society is happy to announce the selection of the 2019 Sherman Family Korea Emerging Scholar Lecture awardee, Dr. Ivanna Sang Een Yi, Korea Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow, East Asian Studies Program, Washington University in St. Louis. Dr, Yi lectures early fall at the Korea Society on Pansori Mountain Pilgrimages: Land as Interlocutor in Contemporary Korean Oral Performance and Literature. Dr. Yi has specialties in Korean and Native American literature and culture. Korea Society Senior Director, Dr. Stephen Noerper, suggests that "Ivanna's focus on land as interlocutor follows very well on our prior recipient's work on imagining the DMZ in new ways from a spatial, architectural discipline and our first recipient's work on maritime boundary cooperation and nationalism." Dr. Yi presents her lecture in both spoken form and sung p'ansori (epic dramatic storytelling), making for a memorable Sherman Scholar lecture. The date and time for Dr. Yi's lecture appears at koreasociety.org on September 1, 2019. The annual award is made possible through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Sherman and family.
