The Korea Society is pleased to host Financial Times correspondent Christian Davies for a discussion on "Korea's Dilemma: Autonomy vs. Dependency." Drawing on his recent tenure as the Financial Times' Seoul bureau chief covering both North and South Korea, Davies will explore how Seoul navigates the competing imperatives of deepening economic and security ties with the United States while seeking greater strategic autonomy to buffer against heightened geopolitical uncertainty.

Expanding U.S-Korea trade and investment cooperation across semiconductors, shipbuilding, energy, and advanced manufacturing, offers significant opportunity but also heightened exposure to economic volatility. At the same time, Korea's evolving security posture—including increased defense spending, advances in indigenous capabilities, and expanded alliance responsibilities—enables both greater contribution to the alliance and independence, raising fundamental questions about the alliance's future trajectory. The discussion is moderated by policy director Jonathan Corrado.

This program was made possible by the generous support of the Korea Foundation and our individual and corporate members.
