Event Link: The three-term Assemblyman Hwang, Jinha (retired ROK Army Lieutenant General) is currently serving as Chairman of the National Defense Committee of the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly. His political careers include Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, the National Defense Committee, and the Intelligence Committee respectively. In addition, as a member of the ruling Saenuri Party (formerly the Grand National Party), he is Chairman of the International Relations Committee, and also served as Vice Chairman of Policy Committee and Chairman of Policy Coordination Committee in the area of national defense, unification, trade, and foreign affairs. Prior to joining the National Assembly in 2004, he had served in the ROK Army for 39 years; his major assignments including Force Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and Defense Attache in the ROK Embassy in Washington, DC. He is a 1969 Class Graduate of the Korea Military Academy. He is representing a city of Paju, north of Seoul, where Panmunjom is located.

The Korean National Assembly’s Chairman of the National Defense Committee, Hwang Jin Ha, addresses New York City influence makers on Korea’s current foreign and defense affairs outlook. He addresses the spike in regional tensions between China and Japan and Korea and Japan, as well as the North Korean threat under young leader Kim Jung Un. Hwang’s visit to New York comes on the heels of the latest China-Korea summit between Presidents Xi Jinping and Park Geung-hye. Hwang concludes with thoughts on the resilience and importance of the Korea-U.S. alliance and new ways forward.

This special executive session features a 9:45 AM preview of the Fall 2014 Korea Society calendar of policy and corporate events, introduced by Senior Vice President, Dr. Stephen Noerper. Representative Hwang’s address begins at 10 AM, with an opportunity for questions and discussion. The session concludes at 11 AM. Light refreshments are available.
