Author Talks: Lee Geum-yi

“Lee Geum-yi has a gift for taking little-known embers of history and transforming them into moving, compelling, and uplifting stories. I loved Willow from the first page to the last. Loved her courage, and her tenacious, yet caring, beautiful soul. The Picture Bride is the ultimate story of the power of friendship—a must read!” — Heather Morris, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Three Sisters

While reading a book on Korean-American immigration history, Lee Geum-yi stumbled across a photo of three picture brides – young women who left their homes in Korea to marry men whom they knew nothing about. Of the three, only one had a name listed, and there was no information about them. With no record of their lives before or after the photograph, she was seized by an inconsolable desire to bring these women—stuck permanently in a black-and-white photo—back to life. From this desire, Lee Geum-yi’s The Picture Bride was born.

Set in 1918, The Picture Bride follows the journeys of three young women: Willow, who comes from a family of Korean independence activists; Hongju, whose husband died two months into marriage; and Songhwa, who was ridiculed by the children in her village, just for being a shaman’s granddaughter. Unfortunately, the social standing of these three women, who left their country and families with dreams of a new world, doesn’t change much in Hawaii. Yet, through the power of friendship and found family, they forge ahead, creating a new kind of American dream.

The Picture Bride is a celebration of immigrant visionaries, adventurers and trailblazers; a beautiful tale of the power or selfless love; and a thought-provoking story that invites important conversations on colonialism and cultural identity. Perhaps put best by Lee Geum-yi, who hopes this story will find resonance with readers today:

Stories of these three immigrant women, I believe, will deeply resonate with American readers today. … I sincerely hope that all of those who find The Picture Bride will find a piece of their own story in this book.

In this episode of Author Talks, Lee Geum-yi discusses her career in Korea and her English debut.

Since then, Lee has published over fifty books in South Korea, and her work has been translated around the world. Young Min Moon | The Share for Those Who Remain

September 15 – December 9, 2022|
Artist Talk : Tuesday, October 25, 2022 5 PM ET|

In his paintings Young Min Moon depicts Jesa, a Confucian ritual for commemoration of the deceased, which was one of the earliest memories he holds while growing up in the military regime of South Korea in the 1970s and 80s. Despite the gender politics now associated with the ritual today due to its patriarchal nature, Moon insists on exploring the legacy. For him, the ritual holds multiple layers of meanings: an occasion of silence utterly severed from the violent era of his childhood, a means of remembering the deceased, and a tradition that may be discontinued in the age of globalization.

Moon’s paintings are also a way of honoring women’s labor for the patriarchal tradition, and an invitation to the celebration of familial ties that are largely inaccessible for diasporic Koreans. In his solo exhibition at The Korea Society, Moon also complicates his relation to the legacy of Jesa by situating it in relation to Catholicism that impacted the Confucian tradition in Korea.

The Korea Society Gallery is open only by appointment. The appointment must be made at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled visit. To make an appointment, please contact info@koreasociety.org.

Bush Foundation and a visiting scholar at Harvard University’s Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies. Free Chol Soo Lee: Screening and Q&A

“A powerful indictment of systemic racism and the criminal justice system” – The Chicago Reader

“Extraordinarily moving… what documentary filmmaking should strive for” – RogerEbert.com

Join us for the riveting documentary FREE CHOL SOO LEE, opening at IFC Center on August 12. A MUBI Release, this revelatory Sundance selection from journalists Julie Ha and Eugene Yi chronicles the story of Chol Soo Lee, a Korean-American whose wrongful murder conviction ignited an unprecedented social movement. Drawing on rich archival footage and personal accounts, the film forms an urgent testament to the power of collective action and the human cost of incarceration.

In 1970s San Francisco, 20-year-old Korean immigrant Chol Soo Lee is racially profiled and convicted of a Chinatown gang murder. Sentenced to life, he spends years fighting to survive until investigative journalist K.W. Lee takes a special interest in his case, igniting an unprecedented push for social action that would unite Asian Americans and inspire a new generation of activists.

Nearly five decades later, award-winning journalists Julie Ha and Eugene Yi excavate this largely unknown yet essential history in their riveting Sundance selection Free Chol Soo Lee. Combining rich archival footage, firsthand accounts, and narration drawn from personal writings, this poignant documentary paints an intimate portrait of the complex man at the center of a movement and serves as an urgent reminder that his legacy is more relevant than ever.

All film showings will take place at IFC Center, 323 6th Avenue.

The Korea Society will host a special Q&A with Julie Ha and Eugene Yi on Sunday, August 14th, after the 5:50 PM showing.

Use a special discount code KOREASOC, which can be applied to any showings; online purchase only.

Artist Talk: Heeseop Yoon

Although her intricate installations are often so large that they spread over walls onto ceilings and floors, Heeseop Yoon thinks of her work as freehand drawings. All of Yoon’s works are based on real spaces with vast messes, such as basements, workshops, storage spaces, or “places where everything is jumbled and time becomes ambiguous without the presence of people.” Based on photographs, Yoon draws freehand without erasing; based on her own drawings, she creates her enlarged wall drawings using black tapes. In the final installation, her miscalculations and corrections are visible, as Yoon is interested in how memory and perception constantly adjust both for herself and for her viewer, and the paradox that the more she corrects her work, the less legible the drawing becomes.

“The more I see, the less I believe in the accuracy or reality of the images I draw.”

Yoon, whose solo exhibition Agglomeration is on view at The Korea Society Gallery June 9 – August 25, 2022, talks about her career and work.
