ABOUT THE ARTISTABOUT THE MODERATOR

Chun Kwang Young (Korean, b.1944) is a sculptor known for his constructions made out of Korean mulberry paper. He received his BFA from Hong-Ik University in Seoul in 1968, and his MFA from Philadelphia College of Art in 1971. Early in his career, Chun focused on painting, deeply influenced by Abstract Expressionism, before switching to the creation of large-scale sculptures in the mid-1990s.

The artist has received numerous awards, and was named artist of the year by the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul in 2001. In 2009, he was awarded the Presidential Prize in the 41st Korean Culture and Art Prize by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in Korea.

His works can be found in the collections of Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Seoul National University Museum of Art, the Museum Kunstwerk in Germany, the Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington, D.C., the Malta National Museum, and the Busan Metropolitan Art Museum. Chun’s solo exhibition will also be showcased at the Brooklyn Museum from November 16 to July 2019. He currently lives and works in South Korea.


New York-based Gallery Director Susan McCaffrey has over twenty years of experience in the international contemporary art market. During her fifteen years at Sundaram Tagore Gallery, McCaffrey has mounted hundreds of exhibitions and supervised installations in museums, cultural venues, commercial spaces, government embassies and private residences around the world.

As the director of Sundaram Tagore’s two New York galleries, McCaffrey is responsible for shaping the gallery’s exhibition program, which mounts an average of ten shows a year, along with a rigorous international art fair calendar. Notable exhibitions include a recent solo show with Korean artist Chun Kwang Young, acclaimed photographer Sebastião Salgado and numerous group invitational shows featuring work by established artists from Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. McCaffrey was also the senior art consultant for Frontiers Reimagined, a Collateral Event of the Venice Biennale, organized by Sundaram Tagore in 2015.

In her role as Gallery Director, McCaffrey has been responsible for ascertaining new talent to bring into the gallery, such as Japanese artist Miya Ando, whose work was recently on view at the Noguchi Museum, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and ArtPrize recipient, Pakistani-American artist Anila Quayyum Agha.

Over the years, McCaffrey has been instrumental in developing the careers of the gallery’s artists, including working in collaboration on site-specific installations and placing photography, paintings and sculpture in significant private and public collections across the globe. In 2017, McCaffrey served on the fundraising committee for the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP).

McCaffrey lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and daughter.

About Shin Kim

Shin Kim, a native of Seoul, Korea, is the founder of Banchan Story , a culinary service company that shares stories of Korean culture through fun and delicious Korean dishes.

She completed her business education at the University of Chicago’s MBA Program and her culinary training at the Institute of Culinary Education, and subsequently refined her craft at some of New York’s finest Michelin-starred restaurants, including Jean Georges, Gilt, and Adour.

Shin shares her passion for Korean food and its stories in recreational cooking classes at select locations in New York City as well as private workshops for corporate clients and educational institutions interested in Korean heritage, culture, and food. She also applies her bi-cultural Korean-American expertise through various projects including translation of recipes and on-site interpretation of cooking demos.

She also expresses her passion for Korean culture through her writing of articles about hidden Korean gems in New York City that have appeared in The Korea Times, The Korea Herald and Yonhap News.


Bluebird Post: Letters from North Korean Defectors to Those They Miss With North Korea Reform Radio

North Korea Reform Radio and the Korea Society co-host a special reading of letters from North Korean defectors now residing in South Korea to those whom they miss from their hometowns in the North. The letters depict the realities of separation and human rights violations suffered by North Koreans. A question and answer session with defectors follows, moderated by Associate Director Jonathan Corrado. A limited number of books featuring a curated collection of the letters will be provided free of charge on a first come, first serve basis to program attendees

Japan, South Korea, and the United States Nuclear Umbrella, with Terence Roehrig

US Naval War College Professor and Asia-Pacific Studies Group Director Terence Roehrig discusses the nuclear umbrella in Northeast Asia in the context of deterrence theory and US strategy. In conversation with the Society’s Stephen Noerper, Roehrig examines the role of the nuclear umbrella in South Korean and Japanese defense planning and security calculations, including the potential for either the ROK or Japan developing its own nuclear weapons.

Professor Roehrig also addresses US and South Korea efforts at North Korean denuclearization in this context.

The Korea Society is co-hosting this program with Columbia University’s Center for Korean Research.

Kwang Young Chun: Aggregation

October 12 – November 20, 2018 | 

Kwang Young Chun is a Korean artist best known for his acclaimed Aggregation series, which features wall-embracing three-dimensional sculptures of triangular forms wrapped in traditional Korean mulberry paper, hanji. The small, individual triangles are grouped together and arranged by the artist to form harmonious works of art. Inspired by childhood memories, the artist continues to use consistent materials and techniques to preserve his cultural heritage.

Kwang Young Chun: Aggregation will be displayed at The Korea Society gallery from October 12 to November 20.

Chun’s solo exhibition will also be showcased at the Brooklyn Museum from November 16 to July 2019.

This exhibition is curated by Sunny Shin.

Remembering the 1988 Seoul Summer Games

The 1988 Seoul Olympics represents South Korea’s first foray as international host and hub. Senior Director and Columbia Adjunct Professor Stephen Noerper leads a special lunchtime discussion marking the thirtieth anniversary of the closing ceremony of the ‘88 Summer Games, which proved vital for Korea’s global “coming out,” Seoul’s development, and democracy’s hold. This program features a special call in from Georgetown University Professor, and fellow sports diplomacy enthusiast, Victor Cha.
